I have not been boating to the Bahamas but I did buy a Mossberg 590 Mariner a few years ago for home defense.
On a side note these shotguns will fire flares as well so I suggest adding one to your list of safety equipment if you are doing the international thing.
Lots of cool ammo is available for 12 gauges.

one of the things that i've heard they are doing lately is floating a cable at water level and cirling in front of the boat they wish to board and hanging up the cable into the drives.. so if you see some floats being towed be a boat don't cross them..

I grew up in the Bahamas and since 1980 when I moved over to the US, I have made an average of about 18 trips per year fishing to either Bimini or Freeport with several trips to Harbor Island. The only time that I encountered any type of problem was in the mid 80's when I was bringing a sailboat from Freeport to Fort Lauderdale. We were approached at nite by a go fast with some young kids on it who had "lost their way" and they wanted to come on board to get a compass reading. Once we showed them our shotguns, they hauled ass away. There is now so much boat traffic going between Florida and expecially Bimini/ Grand Bahama/ Abaco/ Atlantis that there are rarely any problems. I have not heard of anything for a long time. I would be a little more cautious going to the Exumas or some of the further away Out Islands,

This is the main reason I joined OSO...practical knowledge.

Thanks for this advice. I was considering going to bimini... with a female. Just for the novelty (ya know miami vice, the 80's, apache races around an island).

Maybe I'll go someplace in florida- instead.

I just read "Turning the Tide: ONe Man against the Medellin Cartel". It's about Carlos Lehder and Normans Cay (in the exumas). I'd be scared of the police in the bahamas. Sounds like everybody is corrupt after the bahamian Parliment took over from Britain.

I'd love to here the Bimini stories............

Dhlaw:

Aren't you a lawyer?

Lawyers are usually liberal.

Liberals hate guns.

I bought one of these a few months ago. I wish somebody would try to pirate me.

I'm on board with this program. AR-15's are well suited for this task.

Shotgun as a first backup.

Glock or Springfield XD as second back-up.

Of all the Islands Bimini is my favorite. I have been going there since childhood and as late as this year. Since the introduction of South Bimini's "Bimini Sands" townhome/condo Coummunity and Marina it has become even better. www.biminisands.com

52 miles with a heading of 110 or 120 degrees out of Port Everglades inlet it is a fun journey and a great place to visit.

Bimini Sands has a beautiful Marina and 24 hour security. Perhaps you took my post the wrong way. If you take a beautiful woman to North Bimini for dinner and drinking you can sure bet that if you travel down the streets late and toward the Northern end of the island where it is full of locals some drunk Bahamian is going to make a comment. If you are a hot head and defend your girls honor you might forget you are in a foreign county and end up in the slammer. You do not want to be in the slammer in the Bahamas. It is hard to remember that you are not in the US cause it is so close and so commercialized.

Don't get me wrong it is a fun place, just stay in the "area" you belong and think smart. If you go to South Bimini with a woman and go to North Bimini on the ferry for dinner and stay in the "right bars" you will have a lot of fun. I would not suggest doing an island tour at 3 am. During the summer Bimini is full of snorkeling, fishing, diving, drinking, and all around fun.

As far as the other Islands, I like Freeport (70 miles from Palm Beach) but only in the area of the Lucaya Hotel and now Casino. That is where the Florida Powerboat Club is going next week. I have had a lot of fun there but it is very commercial.

The other end of the island "the West End" is scary. I would not go there again on a dare.

Nassua is also very nice but very far by boat. Atlantis is a lot of fun and very safe for tourists. Go to the other parts of the Island where you don't belong and its a different story.

Don't be afraid of the Bahamas, always travel in groups and think smart. Remember that many of the people have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Most Bahamians are very nice and Happy Americans are there spending money. When you see the "bad guys" you will know who they are and you will avoid them.

If you have never been to Bimini it is a "must experience" place. They have great seafood and fresh fish. Just stay away from the square grouper, or don't try to bring it home with you.
