I have also experienced this ,BUT the cause was a loose sparkplug! It could not conduct the heat away to the head and melted,pieces in the motor porcelin part in bilge.

Glad to hear ...you fix it ...cause like you know it's supposed to be vey hot this week-end here up North ..... i don't know where you go boating this week-end (maybe Champlain...) ...have a safe trip ...and hope for you it's going to be a free trouble week-end

Happened to my nieghbors fishing boat too.
