Re: Wrong spot at the wrong time

hate to say it. but unless this is a closed race course why is he in the wrong place? i have been on the water my whole life and the rules of the road apply to everyone. if the three boats on the left of the pics did a fly by on that pontoon . . . well . . . they prolly ought'a get fliped off.

(not trying to start anything but we all have to use the same water ways for what ever makes ya happy)

I agree but disagree. When boating one should know what events are scheduled for their area. Unfortunately this guy got the same reaction speed boaters get when there is a fishing tournament going on or sailing course occuring. Sorry dude :(

Funny pic! Reminded me of when I was a kid in a 17' KMV driven by my dad, bobbing right in the middle of the start of the Georgian Bay poker run several yrs back. We could've easily capsized, or been nabbed by the marine patrol, or receieved rude gestures...none happened!

That is why I try to post on the Fishing Boards a week before our Poker Runs just to give everyone a public service announcement that we will be coming through...

It helps avoid situations like this..... ;)

Whether or not you advertise it in advance, rules of the road still apply.. Common courtesy would apply also..

I agree, but really the rules of the road here, is who the give-way boat and the stand-on boat is. I hope the stand-on boat stays put.

Give it another week. Too soon and they forget.

Scott B, That's mostly common sense but we do cover it all in our driver's meeting in the morning.

Has anyone noticed the boat in the bottom of the page in the first 35-45 seconds of this video? Just seemed unsafe from my vantage point

Re: Wrong spot at the wrong time

We just happened to catch that picture and for the record we do post about the event and even had it on the local news.
Like it was stated earlier, it is a public lake and we cannot close it off, therefore, we do coordinate several police, wildlife and coast guard boats around the lake. Our drivers meeting covers the laws and courtesies on the lake.

The boats went around the guy, he was probably overwhelmed by it all and felt like he was in the wrong place.....

The something in the water was probably wood...just comes with the territory on this particular lake

Re: Wrong spot at the wrong time

No matter how much you try to plan, there's usually someone that did not know. All one can do it try.

(A couple of years ago, for the NY poker on the Hudson, the had the swim around Mahattan and the poker run on the same day. And on anther year, they had a kayak across the Hudson as well as the poker run on the same day.) Jeez, I sound like ............ "And one time, in band camp ...."

Re: Wrong spot at the wrong time

They year I'm talking about was organized kayaking across the Hudson. It was at least a dozen of more doing it.

Here's one from the Sarasota poker run back in April. The pontoon was coming by the lunch stop just as everyone was firing up to head out. What you don't see in the photo- there are at least 8 more heavy hitters within a few hundred feet of them. I can only imagine what they were thinkin!

Re: Wrong spot at the wrong time

I was involved in a poker run on sat most people stayed out of the way and gave us thumbs up and pumped their fists but a few goofs decided to hang out right in the middle of the channel and i saw the bird fly when i went roaring by. So I have had the bird fly more once this year i guess the noise must scare them.

Re: Wrong spot at the wrong time

Though I'm sure he didn't like being there at that particular juncture in time, I doubt he read the Notice to Seamen in the morning before heading out (which I'm sure was published by the organizers) so it can only be his own fault for getting caught in such a precarious position. I know I check them every morning as well as all local newspapers to make sure there isn't going to be a sailing regatta on a given day.

;) :D

Re: Wrong spot at the wrong time

Unless the waterway is closed by the Coast Guard for the event they have every right to be there and follow all the rules, regulations, and laws of the water like everyone else. Although there is no excuse for stupidity, I see plenty of that. ( esp. in Barnegat Bay ) :D

You should share your thoughts with the sailboat races clubs. I run across them ALL the time racing near (or thru) a major transit area. I'm sure they LOVVVVVE us buzzing thru there (even though we do slow down).

Re: Wrong spot at the wrong time

Sharkey posts it everywhere for the runs! And they still complain. Even though it's just being courteous, they still take offense to it! Never fails

Joe,

We do have full contact with the Sailing Associations. They do know we are coming through in the morning. We all do our very best to try to get along. Some you will never be ever to please.
Also, there are times a powerboat may fly by the sailors that doesn't belong to our group. But obviously we get accused.

Re: Wrong spot at the wrong time

It really doesnt matter what you do, someone will find a reason to be pi$$ed off at you, especially the sailboat crowd, most of them seem to hate powerboaters... :argue:
