Default PQ 38 Aveger ?? POWER AND HANDLING

I am thinking about buying a 38 avenger 1999-2001 model year. Are all of these years the same or are there and differences ?

I would like to go at least 70 mph gps so what type of power do I ??
502MPI 500 EFI 500 HP and what is the difference between these engines? and what is there Hp ratings?

Are there any issues with these model years?

Does anybody have any background info on the 38.s that cumberland marine has?

I have a super clean 2002 BAJA 302 WITH 6.2 MPIS AND AM LOOKING FOR MORE SPEED AND ROOM.

Will the 38 handle as good as the 302 in the corrners with the steped hull and are there any other handling issues with a stedped hull I need to know about??

Thanks in advance for the info,

Dave

I would venture to say there are 100 threads on here about stepped hulls. Do a search on it....when you have LOTS of time to kill. It will be entertaining and enlightening.

As for the performance of the 380, I can speak from experience with my 340, you won't have any issues with the steps. Just don't crank the wheel at high speed. It's that simple.

Go to the PQ forum with your speed questions. The folks in there are most informative.

The 38 hull changed around that time (from a straight hull to a twin step). However, the early versions of the step were not very good.

I drove a 2003 stepped hull with 525s and it ran great (~80 mph).

Believe the move to stepped hull was in 98 or 99. They then changed the bottom a bit after some early boats didn't perform as well as expected (I know for sure the last X feet of the strakes were removed from the design). Lots of details in the PQ forum, you might just have to search a bit.

I had a 96 340 vyper, great boat for what it was at that time. Never left me stranded, and owned it for the longest of any boat that I owned. JJ

Must've been something like 8 or 9 months - you're almost as bad as Fred!

At least my boats see water, get driven, and even come off the trailer.
