Re: Merc 600 VS Ilmor 625 in Speed Boat mag
Using my limited knowledge and some quick calculations based on some estimated BSFC's that are most likely inherent to both motors at those rpms I would guess that the GPH differences shown at that great spread could be a typo, misprint or inaccurate transfer of data. I would guess the naturally aspirated Ilmor versus the supercharged Merc should see an advantage to the Ilmor based on real world results supercharged versus N/A, but that big an advantage, I don't think so. Both great engines and good results though!
Kudos to Merc and Ilmor, keep up the good work!

As far as service centers go, there were at least 32 scattered across the US and Canada at last count. You may see them on the Ilmor.com site. At least with the few Ilmor service centers across the US you can get service without the usual Mercury "sorry its not covered" or "lets look into it" bull**** that is normally accompanied by there representitives. Been there done that many times with the blue paint

Lightningbay in Tampa is not where I'd take my boat ever again...been there done that...they have a bad rep in the area. The other places you mention are not in Tampa and are far from here...2-3 hours drive.

I looked very seriously at the Ilmor's for the first Sunsation F4. I ended up going with the Merc 600s, mostly due to the fact that there was better factory support from Merc for rigging a first boat out of the mold.
I talked to Steet and others with the Ilmors and I am sure I would have loved that set up.
With that said, after running the 600s I am pretty happy with them. I preferred NA over blowers, but that is not how I ended up. We have tested the 600s for fuel efficiency and are getting about the same numbers as in this article. We are burning about 32 - 33 gallons per hour at 50mph cruise. I was pretty happy with that, and according to the information I have gotten from the Merc racing representative, the 600s do better on fuel than the 525s in the same setup. We are running pretty much comparable size and weight to the boat in the article.
My bet is the numbers for the Ilmors are wrong in the article. But I doubt the Ilmor is going to get much different gas efficiency than the 600, at least in my set up.
I think it is a matter of personal preference. Either engine will serve you well. Likely the resale on Merc is better, generally that holds true, but if you find the right buyer maybe not. I still perfer NA, and time will tell if I end up wishing I had gone that way.

I should be getting all that info when I get the boat in a couple weeks.
