Anyone know speed of 36 Outlaw w/500's
Dealer says mid 70's. I know the one in powerboat magazine test with 575's ran low 80's. Anyone got similar setup?

I have a 99 36 outlaw with 500EFI's and extension boxes...Top speed on speedo is 78-79...however best according to gps is 72.1 :( Steve |
Thanks Steve,
I like your boat, saw the picture on TeamBajaMarine.com. It looked like you had the stand off boxes. How much do they help? They tell me it will come with 28 pitch props, what are you turning? Mark |
98 36 Outlaw w/HP500 carbs, 26 Bravo's said 75 on the speedo. Im not sure of GPS speed.

I have only ran the boat with the boxes,so really don't know if they are helping my speed or not...I'm turning 23p Mirage Plus props at 5200RPM....This spring I'm going to try some different props and try switching rotation, along with several other things.... Steve |
Our 1999 W/500's has seen 77.4 GPS but this was in excellent water at some point during a poker run (good chop). Typically it will run in the 72 MPH range GPS. Speedo is just a little optomistic at times, but not by much. This is a well loaded boat. TV/VCR, AC, Micro, Fride, usually full water tank etc. Turning Labbed 25 Mirage +'s at 5200 +-50 depending on load, water, weather, etc.

Steve, Nice Outlaw! Nice Pics
Quick question: Are you runing 1.36 gears in your B1 with those 23's? ...That's the only way I could make sense of your numbers? Thanks! |
Nick
While changing out drive fluid last year I noticed that one drive was marked 1.50 and the other 1.36....so i did some checking and found that they are 1.36s...In nasty water I have a hard time getting on plane with the 23s...keep blowing them out... Steve |
Hey Mark,
I guess i will have to leave my boat at home when we do poker runs. I wont have anybody to pick me up when my boat breaks down because you will be to far ahead of me. :D |
Thanks Steve for the info.
I know our boats are not even in the same league, but for what it's worth, I have the same problems with my 23 Mirage Plus. |
I agree about mid 70's. Baja has a tendency to set up their boats inconsistently. I owned a 33 1999 Baja outlaw with twin 502mpis. I ran 69 (GPS). Same boat, same lake same props 72 (GPS). Powerboat magazine, 2001, gave an award to Baja for the 36 with 2/575 sc.

No problem on the info....and thanks for the compliment on my boat....Doesn't matter what you're in,as long as you're on the water and having fun!!!!!! Steve |
I run with a 33 outlaw W/ 500 carbs and boxes. Speedo says high 70's, gps says low 70's. This is in summer weather. 342 w/ EFI 500's runs .5 MPH faster on GPS in same water on same day.

try this;
rpm x pitch x ratio x .0009497 divided by slip in % equals speed. To find slip, use GPS to get actual speed, then calculate from theoritical speed. Be careful on ratio, if its outdrive, the prop is underdriven as compared to V-drive which is overdriven. Never trust pitot tube speedo's. |
Thanks everyone for your replies. This is pretty much what I expected.
My boat will be heavy like yours Gettin' Bye, it is pretty much loaded up. Steve, I was thinking the same thing about those 23 pitch props. Could not figure that one out. The dealer tells me my boat will be shipped with 28's, the drives are the XZ with 1.5:1 ratio's. I will keep you posted on what it will do. Vagrant, just sell that Donzi BIG GUY. As long as you keep offering to drive and I get to sit in the back seat of that dully with free Crown, hell, we will always be boating together. I never had no Chauffeur before. To the lake James and mix be another crown & seven. :D Thanks guys |
