HP500EFI What oil?
Sorry I am asking this cause I see tons of post on oil most of which are too technical for me. (too much information) Just looking for some quick reccomendations. I am at about 100+ hours on my 500EFI's and used nothing but the merc oil. 25/50.
I need a good oil that is easily available at K-mart wal mart murrays ect. I have seen some people switch to synthetic. Not sure if this would be right for me. I dont change my oil a a religious schedule, I check it and when its gets a little dirty I have them change it. keep this in mind too. ON my old blower engines I used a kendall oil because that is what the engine builder reccomended. I dont think I need to pay a premimum for the merc oil but will if it is the best. Thanks |
Re: HP500EFI What oil?
I'm sure Merc doesn't have their own refineries, it's made by someone else. I'd say any premium oil would work. Probably stay in the same weight, or thereabouts.

Re: HP500EFI What oil?
BTW, I ran dino oil in one of my engines, and synthetic in another, I didn't see any difference in either performance, or pressure of the oil. I was hoping the syn would calm down some of the frothing I think I get in my oil at a high speed run.

Re: HP500EFI What oil?
What is concidered premimum? Pennsoil, mobile, castroil, ....

Re: HP500EFI What oil?
Mobil1 (sythentic) 15w50 is perfect for that engine.

Re: HP500EFI What oil?
I would vote for a premium 20-50W, especially in warmer water or temps. We don't use the synthetic Mobile one oils, we have our reasons, but we''ll keep those reasons to ourselves.
Kendall, Valvoline, Red-Line, Mercury 25-40 or such should work just fine. Most real oil issues and problems in marine hi-po engines begin with improper oil pressures, improper oil temperature maintenance and engine clearance and plumbing issues. Don't expect any oil made to solve these problems or cure them. Get everything set up right in and on the motor, then just use good oil, use good service and maintenance methods and the rest will take care of itself. Ray @ Raylar |
Re: HP500EFI What oil?
mobil 1 v-twin 20W50...ran it in my 500 efi's all last year, seemed to loosen them up some and keep the pressure up where it needed...

Guy's He admits ,Since he doesn't change the oil religiously I doubt he will buy synthetic.
I use Val racing St 40 or like Ray says the 20W50,but you really need to change it more often |

Re: HP500EFI What oil?
I run Amsoil 20w-50 racing serve synthetic in mine. With 20 hr change on motor and drive.

Re: HP500EFI What oil?
By premium, I just mean any name brand, not the Royal Purple, Amsoil or the like. Valvoline, Penzoil, etc.

Re: HP500EFI What oil?
I only use Penzoil 50w..... but of course thats suggested because the motor is built. I've used the 25-50 from Penzoil, not sure if its because of my motor clearences or not, 50w seems to not heat up as quickly and runs cooler. Probably not suggested for a stock 500EFI? not positive though....

I guess if ya change it often enough ,before fuel dilution,or when its breaks down from high temps.I been running the Valv 40 for 16 years in different boat blower motors and have never had a bearing problem or oil related problem :D I am sure that if I ran the sythentic lighter oil it might make 5 more HP but so would 10 w mineral base oil  |

Re: HP500EFI What oil?
i am running 30W quaker or pennzoil (they are basicly the same company) change it about every 20 hours, i cheat and do the filter every other change. I use an AC delco filter premium brand and a fraction the cost of mercury.
i also believe in filling the engine so it is just over the add line, less less resistance for the crank to run thru and less chance of foaming. my two cents |
Re: HP500EFI What oil?
Thanks for the info, I usually have the marina change the oil on this boat because its easier for me. They say they use the merc oil but I want to be sure whats going in there from now on.
I was wondering about the synthetics as I heard in the past they hold up better to higher temps ect. I dont put many hours on the boat usually 50 - 80 a year but now I am doing more trips and want to change the oil more frequently and with the same oil every time. Thanks everybody :D |

Thats because AC does not make the merc filters Wix does...and Wix makes a much better filter then AC does Just my 3 cents :drink: |
Re: HP500EFI What oil?
Wix Racing 1061R direct from Napa. Best filter you can put on a 500EFI.
(1060R for the 496Mag/HO) |
Re: HP500EFI What oil?
I read that the Wix filter is better because the filter isn't paper that is prone to swelling up if any water gets in the oil at all.

I was thinking the same thing! I also would never post something like that here especially when the boat in question is in the classified! |

(1060R for the 496Mag/HO) Wix Racing is very good if you want a heavy case that won't blow and a good filter too. K&N is very good. Fram Racing is about the only thing I see on racing engines these days... I am very surprised everyone has not gone to a PAO synthetic oil...the data is in...it is superior... |
Re: HP500EFI What oil?
I use Amsoil synthetic motor oil, trans, and gear lube. It lasts longer and does not break down.

Well I guess a little dark is better than milky oil! DIY is cool especially X 3. |
