Need Help About To Leave For The Lake
I was cleaning the boat up about to leave and noticed under the drain hole there was a small puddle, stuck my finger in it and it was oil, smells more like rear end oil so Im assuming that it is drive oil? and motor level was fine it wasnt much probly about 3 oz or so, what the heck is going on? where do I check the drive fluid level?
thanks |
Re: Need Help About To Leave For The Lake
Under the bilge drain hole?
If so, check your drive oil reservoir level. Its either a tubular cylinder or squared container somewhere mounted on your engine or transom. If its really HIGH then your oil heated up while the drive has been sitting in the sun, and it bubbled out of your reservoir. Not a big deal, just check the level and go boating. If its really LOW then check your transom under/behind your motor; under where the coupler goes to the transom assembly. If you have traces of oil dripping down here, or anywhere else in your bilge, you have a drive oil leak between the reservoir and the drive, and this is not good. It sounds like the drive oil leak may be inside the bellows which is the worst place for a leak, and you don't want to take the boat out as there could be other complications. |
Re: Need Help About To Leave For The Lake
thanks it was almost a 100 here for like 4 - 5 days straight, it is under the bilge drain hole, then some leaked out on the ground.. not to sound like a dumzbas but where do i check the level the top air vent hole?

Re: Need Help About To Leave For The Lake
if yours is an 1988 gen1 alpha you do not have a drive resivor....
on the side of the drive is a screw in the upper remove screw and see if drive oil comes out it should be filled to the screw hole |
Re: Need Help About To Leave For The Lake
My alpha's were all early alpha's with no resevoir. Like I've often wondered, why would you need a resevoir, unless you had a leak. I'd check the o ring at the drain and fill plugs, check you level and let it eat. I'm betting on the o ring.
I was wondering about the drive because I though it might have been a Trs, and it could have been the tranny. |
Re: Need Help About To Leave For The Lake
thanks Cuda no trs just a good ole gen 1, I checked it and it was about a 1/4 bottle low, I was wondering why drives have resiviors too? filled till it leaked out the hole, so we will see
thanks guys |
Re: Need Help About To Leave For The Lake
If there is no way that drive fluid from an Alpha enters the engine compartment of the boat (no reservoir); then how does drive fluid come out of the bilge plug hole? Did it come from there or just appear to?
|
Re: Need Help About To Leave For The Lake
no it came from there , stuck my finger in the hole and could feel it and saw it drip from there into the small puddle
after the last time I used it, it sat at work for like three days and not a drop then I put it in storage (outside) and it sat there for about 8 days with the bow up. You would think it would have just leaked out there? it was almost a 100 degrees for 5 of those days if that had and thing to do with it? weird |
Re: Need Help About To Leave For The Lake
So, it appears as though you are leaking fluid into the bellows, and its draining down the bellows in through the transom assembly, down the inner face of transom, and out the bilge hole. It does need to be addressed. Once you are running and heat that drive oil up and you trim the drive out to run, you may push too much of your fluid into the bellows and into the bilge, and that will break the drive due to lack of lube.... worse case scenario. :(

Re: Need Help About To Leave For The Lake
thanks, Im going to take it out and keep a eye on it, but dont you think it was weird that it took that long to show up?
