Default Historical Race Boat in Sarasota

Does this boat look familiar? The photo was taken in the dry pits in Sarasota yesterday.

I saw that in the parade but was changing batteries in my camera and it got past me. Older Formula....

Yet it had "Cigarette" embazoned across the transom....

Don Aronow raced a 233 in the Miami to Key West race and yes, he called it The Cigarette after the famous Brooklyn rum runner from the 30's.

He used the same name on the 32 foot Cary he raced in 1969, which became the beginning of "Cigarette Racing Team" as Cigarette boats is now called.

Maybe this is the same boat? Brownie might give us some clue as what to look for.

Aronow had that boat with a 409 Chebby/Merc on a #2 Merc Drive. I had the twin with a 427 Ford/Interceptor on a Crusader V-drive. His was faster, mine was a MUCH better sea boat. His was named 'The Cigarette' and mine was 'Hijacker', after very famous offshore boats of the 20's. If you look closely at the pic, you will see a grabrail on the aft deck. On the first test run, Aronow, Jake Trotter, Stu Jackson and I jumped the wake of a huge cruiser, and landed on the right side at about 50 mph. We broke several ribs (some in the boat, some in the crew). Jake landed on Aronow, and Stu landed on me. Jake and Stu left in the green truck, and I drove the boat back to the factory with Aronow gasping with broken ribs. He had driven the control box completely through the side of the boat. Hated outdrives ever since..................
