New 700s In A Donzi 38 ZR

3 Attachment(s)
Well we took our first test ride in a New Donzi 38 ZR with 700 Mercs and NXT Drives. We ordered this boat for a customer and we took her out for her first maiden run, Mike (Customer) and myself had a last, Mike is use to a 38ZR because allready owned one that ran 90 but this is a whole different ball game: First I want to say a special thanks to everyone at Donzi who puts this awesome boat together, Especilly Gene Weeks from Donzi who worked hard on making this package work so well on the ZR,Mercury for coming out with a 700 package.
NOW THE FUN PART: I love the 38 ZR the way she handles, runs and rides! I didn't know what this boat could do with 700s but I found out, the 700s with Staggereds gets on plane instantly. The torque is unreal and at 4600 RPMS runs 90 MPH. Once you throttle up the torque pulls you in the seat from 90 and your at 100+ with in seconds we didn't run the boat fully out yet so we don't know top end yet, we are also waiting for new wheels form Donzi because with 17X37 Herings are hitting the rev limiter, we had a full tank and at 5000 Rpms hit 104 MPH and she was stable, Donzi had her up to 110 MPH with test wheels and we are waiting for the new wheels to come in. She Ran stable in 2ft chop and we caught a couple of big wakes from boats and the boat at 100 still didn't feel like she was getting loose. All I can say is one of the nicest packages I have seen in a long time and really makes the 38ZR come alive! :D

Nice work Frank. That's a sweet ride Mike.
Now all you have to do is convince Gene to put a 700 in a 27zr.

3 days later, and I'm finally almost right.

Nice #'s and set up!!!! :drink:

Why would they send the boat out with the wrong props?

37 pitch sounds like it needs a gear change

This was the first 700 boat and the customer was biting at the bit he didn't want to wait 2 more weeks for the new props to come in so he would rather be boating then have no boat. The props that are coming are 38s herings, Remeber the drives are baby 6# drives and if you change the gears you will change the way the boat runs, she will be slower on take off. Hering does make 38s and the way the boat runs, gets on plane, and thows a rooster tail 3 stories high without feeling any slip is ok by me.This boat was running with 220 Gallons of fuel and we didn't open her up and she was at 104. Donzi ran the boat and when I recieved her the GPS Tatle tale was at 110. The thing that surprised me was the attitude this boat ran for a 38 over 100 was flawless. No chine, no walk just straight and strong. The 700s has a 1 year waranty complete just like the 525s.
I don't think you would be able to get a 700 in a 22 Classic with the size of the drive.

Tom,

Thanks. I ran her for a while last night but then it had to go and get dark on me.

I'll be out playing all weekend. If you're around give me a call on my cell and we'll hook up for lunch or something.

Mike

5200 RPMS we had her up to 5000 and ran out of room with the boat traffic yesterday with only slight trim on the drives

Re: New 700s In A Donzi 38 ZR

someone here said that merc was having trouble toasting NXT1 drives behind the 700.....true? BTW, that is the perfect setup for a 38ft boat. Shoot a small video of her running and post it if you can.

Georgeous boat....I'm a bit confused with the picture of the GPS at 105 mph with one engine off, one at 600rpm and shadows on the deck like the boat is still at the dock; my GPS tends to read close to 0 under these conditions - what up? - Jeff

Tattle tale speedo. At those speeds, you can pay attention to the water, and see how fast she went when you slow down.

Beautiful boat by the way. Hope I see her running on the bay before i move to Jacksonville......Those NXT drives are cool as hell. Love to see some in person.

Good luck with it.......

I haven't heard any bad news on the NXT drives toasting.
On the GPS speedo she is a tattle tale set up so when you shut the motors down all you have to do is turn on the ignition and hit the tattle tale to recall and she will tell you the speed you were running without running the engines. Believe me over 100MPH you don't want to be hitting a tattle tale, just to check speed, you want to be alert at all times on whats coming at you or opsticles in the way

Transmissions, not drives are having issues
