Need V8 - 20° ignition modules
I'm in need of 2ea V8-20° Thunderbolt ignition modules. I'm looking for used ones at a reasonable price. Any ideas on aftermarket replacement items for these modules would be appreciated also.

Got a part number? SuperV just switched to MSD from T-Bolt.

From the information I have, which is a little dated, Merc made (3) different 20 degree modules;
Part #'s; 817509T should be marked V8-20R 805361T5 should be marked V8-20R 17316A1 should be marked V8-HP 817509T and 17316A1 are the 2nd design, which is the plastic module mounted to an aluminum plate. 805361T5 are the 3rd design and are suppose to be the same as 2nd design without the aluminum plate. The only thing I don't know is if all of these are interchangeable or if they changed the plug-in. If there is a plug in alternative to the Merc, I would like to know also. A change over of modules, even if I had to buy new, would still be cheaper than (2) complete MSD ignition systems. |
Yup. The MSD swap is slightly under 800 bucks for twins. I set them up at 17 degrees (crankshaft) advance, all in by 3000 rpm. That leaves me with 15 degrees initial advance and 32 degrees total. I'll check with SuperV on part numbers Friday morning. He's snowmobiling up north and will get home late Thurs. night. P.S. Be sure to check the lower distributor housing for wear between the shaft and the housing.

Man does that ring a bell..The bushing on my stock T-IV was worn out. The good news is that they are only a 3.00 part.

Thanks Crazyhorse, I will check the lower bushings. Is this normal wear, or a known issue with the Thunderbolt?

Anyone else?

Thank's JIMKID, do I need to email you?

I don't know if the bushing deal is common or not. I haven't seen the problem for quite a while but the last two engines I did had both of them wiped out. everything else in the engines, including the cam and distributor gears, looked good. Let me know how yours look.
