GPS in dash, any ideas?

Speedo doesn't work with the new shorter lowers and I don't want to stick a Pitot in the water, so it looks like I will be swapping out the analog speedo for a digital GPS. Cat&Mice already suggested the Garman 168 with a large display (good for us old guys). I sure would appreciate your suggestions. We don't need mapping, just speed read out and some kind of function to read out the max speed etc. Thanks.

p.s. If we have already done this thread previosly, please forgive, and direct me.

Have you looked at the Gaffrig GPS speedo kits? Replaces your dash speedo with a GPS unit and even has high speed recall! :D

Audiofn 02-06-2002 09:28 AM

Any reason that you have not mentioned the GPS speedow from Gaffrig, Norskog, and others? They will go were your old guage was and you can get them to hook up to your hand held or perm. GPS for the antenna or go with the complete kit.

I'm having a GPS speedo installed next week!

No more bent pitot tubes or tubing coming off!!!

:D :D

Dean Ferry 02-06-2002 10:32 AM

I have a good friend that has the Gaff. GPS speedo and he says that is cool and everything, BUT he also has a Garmin GPS MAP 76, (I have same unit), and he takes that along for NAV. and back-up to the Gaff. He said that the Garmin's update rate is much FASTER than the Gaff. unit, to the point that he doesn't really use the Gaff. unit anymore! Don't mean to confuse this subject, just my friends experience, and it help presuade me to by the Garmin unit, and dash mount it.

Uncle Toys 02-06-2002 10:48 AM

Thanks guys!

29scarab - Which unit are you installing and why?

Wally & Audiofn - Do you guys have these or have experience with them?

Dean Ferry - Is the Garmin a unit that fits into the speedo hole on the dash? Good idea about the "update rate." Never thought about that. I have a hand held unit if I ever need the mapping function. But at Havasu, that's probably not going to be an issue other than offroading in the winter.

Eliminator has recommended Garmin and Norskog, but I'm guessing its because, that's what their parts guy has.

Input is very much appreciated as I will be pulling the trigger around 2pm (left coast time).

29scarab 02-06-2002 10:54 AM

Uncle Toys,

I left that up to my marine mechanic. He'll install the best on the market. I'll talk to him this weekend to find out for sure and get back with you on other info!

:D :D

Unc.
I removed our liquid filled Livorsi speedo and installed their analog round faced GPS unit. It was a snap to install, very accurate, and the recall and average feature is great. It fit right into the dash cutout for the liquid filled. It looks just like a liquid filled guage, and is self contained, and comes with everything needed.

UT,
One way to go and i am not necessarily saying it is the best, is to use a Norskog dash GPS speedo and a Garmin 176 to drive it. The NEMA sentencing for the Norskog is an older version however a patch can be downloaded from the Garmin web site and the older Nema structure selected. (I think it is Nema 1, can't remember but Nordskog knows). The 176 is the only Garmin plotter that had the flexibility to revert to older Nema formats that we could find.
Norskog has its own receiver but with the 176 you get the flexibility of having a plotter. Hope this helps.

UT,
No, the Garmin GPS Map 76 is a hand held that i ordered the marine dash mount for and I just slip the 76 into the mount and plug in the 12VDC power cord. I really like the unit, but I'm afraid my comparing my "Apple" to the "Orange" that you are wanting.

I replace my Gaffrig gauge with the new GPS analog Gaffrig. Looks exactly the same as the liquid filled speedo and has recall! Very easy to install just need a pull power line from the ign wire in the dash. Never will I go back to pickups again! :)

Uncle Toys 02-06-2002 02:39 PM

Eliminator told me about $500 and up.

Airpacker 02-06-2002 03:14 PM

hey U.C. just put a sticker over your old speedo that says 100mph :D

Retail for these units is $446 for the 3 3/4" face kit
And $486 for the bigger 5" kit.
That includes the speedo in a 80, 120, or 180MPH face and the antenna/receiver and memory recall switch.
Its also extra if you want it in white and extra if you want a different colored rim.
I can get it to you guys for a bit cheaper if anyone is interested. Just shoot me an email :D

And i have on eof these installed on my Mini-cat. Works cool from what ive played with it :D

Wally 02-06-2002 04:09 PM

Oh...and you can also buy the head unit alone if you want to hook it up with an exsisting GPS unit IF it has an output port on it! :D
The head units retail for $236 and $276 :D

Raypanic 02-06-2002 04:16 PM

The gaffrig digital one feature Speed, Tach, Volts and Compass all in one nice package. I installed one last week - Very easy. Recall is on the speed and tach. I split the tach signals with a SPDT Switch and can monitor each engine independantly. www.gaffrigperformance.com

Thanks guys, appreciate the input. Just called Eliminator and told them to slap in the Garmin 168 - Mike, your the man! Although I did give airpacker's suggestion deap and meaningful consideration
;)

gslinger 02-06-2002 05:07 PM

Dean Ferry, I'm looking at the garmins 76 and 176map. My ? to you is the screen big enough or do you think that I should go with the 176?

Cat & Mice 02-06-2002 05:19 PM

UT, I am glad to see you finally came around. Also I should have called me, I can get Garmin direct and saved you some money. Make sure that Mike peterson from Eliminator orders the Transponder with water temp sensor. It only cost about $20 and is well worth it.

Pyle

gslinger 02-06-2002 05:22 PM

cat&mice what kind of price can you get on garmin 76map 176map?

packinair 02-06-2002 06:17 PM

I have the gaffrig speedo in my boat. looks great works great. not bad to install either. also you can leave it on when towing to make the tatel tale higher :D

Madcow 02-06-2002 07:50 PM

I have the Nordskog speedo hooked to a Garmin 180. The charting capability of the GPS is incredible! The only downside of the Nordskog is it is lit with 6 blue LEDs, and is blinding at nite. Otherwise the GPS fired speedo is the way to go. If you don't need a GPS, you can get a GPS reciver that will only run the speedo for a lot less money than the 168. Good luck :)

boot 02-06-2002 08:56 PM

Hey ,packin air, Are you saying your boat goes faster on the trailer then in the water ?

Wally ,Which brand are you talking about ?

I have a 180 garmin .It is great ,but it doesn't have max speed reading ! Which unit can I hook to it to give me this ?

Audiofn 02-06-2002 11:28 PM

You can take your Garmins and any other brand with a NEMA output and hook it up to your GPS speedo and the speedo will read the same as the GPS screen. The updates are the same as well.

Jon

Dean Ferry 02-07-2002 07:36 AM

gslinger,
For what I do with it, the screen on the Map76 unit is more than easy to read @ speed. I like the option of removing it from the boat @ the end of the day because my boat sits on a lift over Salt water, and salt water vapor is pretty intrusive. Good luck with your purchase.
MD

Madcow 02-07-2002 08:14 AM

Boot, the Nordskog speedo has a high speed memory recall.

The Gaffrig/Livorsi units. :D

boot 02-07-2002 09:36 AM

Thanks everybody ! Does anybody know if there is one that reads to 140 or 160 ? 120 is not enough and 180 is just a little much! :D Thanks .

Audiofn 02-07-2002 09:51 AM

Boot sounds to me like you need bigger motors not a slower Speedo :D :D

Uncle Toys 02-07-2002 10:15 AM

Oops! The Garmin 168 doesn't fit in my dash Mike  I've got too many gauges thanks to Dustin (that's actually a positive - thanks Dustin!) So I went with the digital Nordskog (Eliminators recommendation). I'll call this morning and talk to Mike Peterson and see if water temp sensor is an option. Pulled out Hot Boat magazine last night and checked out your dash again and saw the Garmin. Looks cool, but god I love gauges. Guess my hand held will have to do for the mapping (if and when I need it on the water). They quoted me $600 installed. My boat has been at Eliminator now for five weeks and if I don't get it back in time for Presidents weekend I'm going to blow Micks 50 amp fuse.

p.s. Mike, how's it going up there with the winter Olympics?

Cat & Mice 02-07-2002 12:56 PM

UT, how long is your boat going to be at Eliminator? I am taking my boat down in two weeks and maybe I will se yours.

I understand about the 168 not fitting, We are doing a install on a Formula and we have to redo the dash layout to get it in.

The Olympics are crazy. The President's Heli just flew over head about 10 minutes ago. They are preparing for his arrival in the morning. Things are getting exciting!!

Pyle

Uncle Toys 02-07-2002 01:41 PM

Mike, are you trailering your boat down to Eliminator in Mira Loma? If so, that's only about a half hour drive from my house. Lets get together and meet at Eliminator! Or, if you need a place to stay, we have a guest room.

Cat & Mice 02-07-2002 02:19 PM

UT, Thanks I would love to get together while we are in LA. We actually are going to be in our new Motorhome so we won't need the room but thanks for the offer.
I am not sure when we will be in LA because I think we will hang in Havasu for awhile first.

Pyle

Uncle Toys 02-07-2002 03:18 PM

Mike - Havasu? Now your talking! Just so happens I can extend the offer there also, or a place to park your RV. But then you probably already know people at the lake. We will be there Presidents weekend, would love to get a ride in your pocketrocket - but materially slower than 131.6mph ;)
