Puder,
I am gonna take a stab at it. I spoke to a good source that tells it to me like this. When President Roosevelt was in office one of his homes was very close to the inlet. The inlet was patroled by the Secret Service daily with 27 foot Maltese Magnums. So it was named Goverment Cut.(Maybe)

Cause that's were the government would hang -out to catch the fine folks out on Hay Rides :D :p

Were Magnums even being made when Roosevelt was in office??

Anyone have a clue as to what the new security measures in the cut going to do to boat rides in the cut @ the Miami show??

In order to improve the access of the harbor in Miami, the government "cut" a channel through the southern most part of Miami Beach. This in turn created Fisher's Island which was owned my Carl Fisher the pioneer of Miami Beach and later Gar Wood of racing fame. There is even (or was) a mosoleum to Fisher on the island but was never used. The old dockage for Miami is where Bayfront part now is. Government Cut is a common name for channels dredged for shipping.
