Allan Dunteman: A Tribute

That’s how Allan Dunteman lived his life. From attempting to jump off the roof of his home as a chil d (trying
to be a paratrooper), to building a family business into a thriving multimillion dollar company, to constantly
supporting the less fortunate through charitable giving, to setting the world record for twelve cons ecutive
victories in offshore power boat racing, “Allan put two years of living into every year of his life” said Sheila,
his wife of 46 years “His motto was, “If you are not living life on the edge, you are taking up too much room!”
Allan’s love of speed got into his blood early, influenced by his father who sponsored an Indianpoli s 500 race
car. With an “if it moves, I will race it” attitude, Allan took on bikes, cars, boats –anything in m otion. At one point,
he even organized lawn mower races in his neighborhood.
He acted invincible, thriving on a bit of danger. As a teen he was run over by boat in a race but su rvived
without a scratch, deepening his fearlessness. “He was constantly in action-car trips, hang gliding, racing, or
taking us all scuba diving,” said his son, Kirk. “He also loved to have fun and stir things up a bit .”His sense of
humor was aptly reflected in the name of each of his offshore powerboats-“Agitator.”
Offshore powerboat racing was truly his passion. With Kirk as his throttle man, Allan raced in water s
throughout the country for nine years. In 1985 he was named rookie of the year, in 1986, driver of t he year,
and was undefeated in 1991. His racing career culminated in his 1993 world record and his induction into
the American Power Boat Association Hall of Champions-Offshore.
“My dad believed that winning is a habit,” said Kirk. “He approached all contests, business or pleas ure,
expecting to win, every time. And he usually did.”
As hard charging as Allan could be, he also had a heart as big as the oceans he raced on. In his
characteristically rapid manner, he was always there to help any friend or family member who needed a
hand, whether it was with money to help the teachers at school, funding for the church, or just lend ing a
hand to get a friend through a tough time. Among his many local charitable and political contributions, in
2002, he and Sheila were recognized for their dedication to the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago wi th a
Celebrate the Children Award.
Allan’s softer side was reflected in his devotion to his seven grandchildren: Luke, Colt, Tara, K.C. , Kris, Krystal
and Kailee from Kirk (Kim) and another son, Skip-playing with them and spoiling them every chance he had.
This was the time when he took his foot off the gas and just enjoyed more laid-back moments.
Not surprinsingly, Allan ensured he would go out with a blasting good time. A celebration of his lif e will
include fireworks that contain his ashes.
Sheila best captures his spirit. “Allan truly lived life his way. He gave it his all, did it all wit h class, and
got it all in return.”
