Southern California LA boaters
 

Just curious where there is to boat around the LA / Riverside / San Bernadino California area. I know the obvious Lake Havasau and the Ocean. Are there are other nice inland lakes that are close. How far of a tow is it from LA to Havasau? What can you tell me about boating in the area. The boat would be a 24-28 ft cat or v.

NO. But they're are a couple that may work for testing: Castaic (by LA), Lake Elsinore, Lake Perris...

How far of a tow is it from LA to Havasau?
Plus or minus 5 hours.

What can you tell me about boating in the area.
5 hours each way blows. I ended up getting a 26' Sutphen to reduce my drive time to 20 minutes! Now I boat in the big lake (Pacific Ocean) at least twice a month!
The water in LA get's really serious in the afternoons. Will kick the crap out of you after about 2:00pm, so most get out on the water early.
Long Beach Harbor is pretty neat for boating...big protective seawall, the Queen Mary, good restuarants, Catalina Ski Race, Rum Runner race. It's about 26 miles to Catalina where you can moor overnight and get loaded on shore. :drink:

If your gonna do Havasu a 26-28 footer will do. If you're gonna hit the Pacific, I'd recommend at least a 30 footer, but a 35' plus would be preferable.

Offshore out of Channel Islands Harbor is a great adventure.
An early AM visit to Santa Cruz & Anacapa is almost inspirational.
BTW, there is no such thing as runnin' WOT out there!

Lake Castaic has speed limits
Lake Perris and Elsinore seem dirty (algae like)
Lake Casitas doesn't even allow boats (I don't think)
Lake Nacimiento is too far from L.A (Havasu like distance)

The ocean is it.

Santa Barbara - No mans land

Ventura/CI - Beautiful, Island destinations, but ROUGH seas more often then not.

Marina Del Rey- Nice, city glitz, nowhere to go though

Redondo/King - Socals blue collar harbor - drunks, trailer trash, and all.

LB/Alamitos/HH - The place to be. Stay behind the breakwater and haul a$$ and see the different ports and marinas, or go outside the break and get the big seas to have fun in. Catalina is close too

Newport - Glitzy, but too long to get from the ramp to the ocean (like 45 minutes at idle)

That is what I know. Socal offshore life is a small community.

Thats for the responces, by looking at the map some of the lakes are pretty big. I boat primary on Lake Michigan is rough water is mostly what we run into. I would like to run in some swells.

Channel Islands or Ventura Harbor is where yu want to launch at. Or maybe going out to PV Point from Long Beach Plenty of big swells to have fun in.

But...it depends on where you are staying or living. Where in Socal?
