Many of the offshore boaters come out of Clear lake or other places around Galveston Bay. |

Galveston is vulnerable to hurricanes just like the rest of the barrier islands around the country. Prices are cheaper than FL.
The water inside the pass is greenish clear in the summer and brown in the winter due to rougher water keeping it stirred up. Run offshore in the summer and its not far to crystal clear blue water. Winter is a little further. Seas are relatively calm in summer (except for tropical weather). Cooler weather brings north winds(usually preceded by south winds a couple of days) that create very short spaced seas that will beat the hell out of you. Lots of oil platforms offshore. Yeah they are ugly. But they great artificial reefs you can fish or dive on. I don't live in Galveston but have worked a lot out of there on commercial boats. I like Galveston. |

The clear lake area which is about 20 miles into the bay from Galveston has the second highest concentration of boaters in the US I believe.
All of Galveston and as much as 40 miles inland is susceptible to a Cat 5 storm surge. There are some very nice properties there. Based on my travels, Clear lake, Galveston and Galveston bay are still excellent values. You wouldn't want to ride out a 3+ Hurricane anywhere on the island though. The most recent maps showing a cat 5 storm surge predict it would stop about 300' in distance and 5' vertically from my house. |
