You pay the piper for your experience. The bottom line is that's what it costs to own one, period. The insurance will NEVER get cheaper for one. If you want a cat, you pay the costs to own it, or you don't have one.
Your experience in a vee bottom, or your Dad's, is also pretty much irrelevant. The two designs are driven completely differently, and the cat is much faster. They want to make sure your experienced.
Edit: and if you're paying $1500 a year for a Gladiator with anything other than V-6 motors, you're getting an excellent deal.

That would definitely wake the boat up a bit. I heard Phil was going to build one with 700's but I dot think anything came of it. I know the Glad wasn't designed for transmission drives.

I never got an exact quote but had been told for a 36 Skater or Nor-Tech with decent size power and no layup in South Florida, around $15-20k and that is just nuts. We pay a little over $6,000 for the T/S Gun and my dad is 59 with a million years of boating experience.
