Top Gun engine mount project.

Stripping the paint from the engine mounts for my Top Gun exposed some corrosion between the main plate and the stiffining flanges. There was also some mild surface rust that needed to be removed.

I decided that the only way to remove the rust completely was to cut off the flanges, clean up the edges of the plates, make new flanges and weld them on.
Here are a couple of pictures that I took of the process.

After I removed the flanges. I cleaned up the plates and started bending and fitting new flanges.

Using an old block as a fixture to prevent the plates from distorting during the welding process, I tack welded the new flanges in place.

I finished the welding with a continuous bead around both sides using the ''TIG'' process, to prevent water from entering the joint and causing any future problems.

The next step is to clean up the factory welded area around the mounting pads and then on to paint.

I'm just going to prime them with PPG DP90 epoxy primer and follow up with PPG Delstar acrylic enamel with DXR80 catalyst. I've had real good experience with it and if I have a problem down the road, I can strip and refinish is easier than I could with powdercoating.
