Almost got screwed too when buying a 572... Fortunatly, my check got stopped at customs, returned to me, and same moment somebody e-mailled me he went physically to see the engine and there were nobody there, and no engine there where was supposed to be the pick-up adress... there was only a mail box. I was just lucky, and not good enough to find the scam by myself...

Always look for the perforated edge also.

I saw one returned after 20 days.

I had a check last year that my bank verified was fine, but I had a bad feeling and did my own checking, it was a total scam...The bank does not always check thoroughly, and they can kick it back weeks after they have cleared it. Wire transfer is the only way to go when you do not know who you are dealing with.

That scam has been going on for a while.
At least you caught it before you got burned.
See this post from a while back.

I got a deposit from the tooth fairy but she never followed through with the deal. Read the begining of the post, it will explain everything.
