Can you say, "small craft advisory"?

Some of the USCG boys out having fun. Kind of hard to see in the pics, but I'm pretty sure you can make out the Apache Indian head logo on the side of the boats... :evilb:

Isn't that the training boat that is "unsinkable" and always rights itself ?

Yes. The Weather Channel had USGC Rescue stories on last night. The 47' that is used in rescues is unsinkable and if it goes under brings itself right side up within 8 seconds.

Last nights story showed one of the boats going over and coming back up.

The pics are amazing. The water is huge!

playing that close to the rocks adds some urgency and realism to the training I'm sure.

Re: Can you say, "small craft advisory"?

I always said I'd never be scared in big waves... I think I'd be asking myself what I would be doing there... But if you really think of it, we're mostly scared not to damage or sink the boat! So after all, if I had the chance to do this, without being scared of the boat itself...

I'D DO IT!!!

I just read somewhere recently 4 crewmen died during training when their boat went up on the rocks. Showed pics of the smashed boat too. F'd Up!

We go surfing down there and have seen those guys going out when the onshore gets blowing hard. It looks insane but I'd love to go for a ride in it.

WOW. Some incredible shots there. I remember they took delivery of one of those 47 footers at the Manasquan CG station about 3 or 4 years ago. They are badass boats. My fav:

I'm into windsurfing and I vacationed alot around the Colimbia River Gorge, Sand Bar; also boat around the area as well, an average day is a small craft advisory! Hence why the Coast Guard trains in the area and I have leaned towards an older TG......

A terrible tragedy. It was early 1997 on a real mission at night. Three died one survived.

I graduated from the Motor LifeBoat School in December of 1990 and spent three years driving 44 MLB's out of Station Chetco River. Looking back it really was an incredible experience, I used to fish out of Ilwaco with my dad and got my first glimpse of the Coast Guard on those fishing trips when I was very young.

In 2000 I took delivery of a brand new 47 in Slidell and delivered it on its own hull to San Juan, Puerto Rico…just another incredible experience I was fortunate to be a part of.

That's the one....Very sad....Look how well the boat held up after a pounding like that. Anything else there wouldn't be anything left.

That is a 44 foot motor life boat. :(

The 44's were constructed of 3/16 corten steel with 5/16 under the engine room. The engines started in gear and were actually a very forgiving craft as you could make a 44 do just about anything. Very tough boats. The aluminum 47's are running first generation DDEC's and were problematic to achieve required performance standards especially in warm water. I did not have the opportunity to run a 47 in the surf but the boat performed okay during the time I had one assigned.

The idea of the boat is to self right if something goes wrong. These boats are not rolled intentionally. The perfromance objective is to effect a succesful mission in surf conditions with minimal or no incident or impact upon the craft or crew.

Running these boats in the surf is a lot of fun but it will also get your attention real quick if you screw up.

Unless it was an Apache - the rocks would be pebbles in that case. :evilb:

Almost daily off Cape Disappointment you can see 10 to 20 breaking waves, according to the USCG. The other area further north in the Georgia Strait gets pretty fun most days as well that I boat in......... Defiently care more for offshore performance over top speed!!!!!! :D

daily Like this:
