Heads Off Prepairing Block to fight Rust
 

I took my old heads off my engines and will not be repacing them for a couple months with new heads. Whats the reccomended way to store the blocks? I filled with antifreeze and sprayed with WD40 to fight corrision. Coverd the blocks with plastic. Is this the best way? Thanks

Good morning Evan,
You can also smear grease on the block deck surface and down in the cylinders. You may have to wipe some of the wd 40 out in order to get the grease to stick. WD 40 will dry up and you will end up with small rust sections in the bores and on the decks.

Should I leave the blocks full of anitfreeze or drain them dry?

Toss them in an oven at 250 for a couple hours, WD-40 the hell out of them, wrap them in plastic then bag them- use a vac to pull out the air. You can also toss in a couple of dessicant packs for good measure.

Wipe the cylinder walls with good old motor oil. You have to turn the engine in order to cover them all.

You can leave antifreeze in the blocks if you want. If you leave them drained they will sometimes have salt "grow" out of the blocks onto the deck surface.

Couple times in the past I smeared some grease on the deck surface, then put a kitchen plastic garbage bag over the top. The garbage bag would seal to the grease.

When I was ready to go I would put some rags in the cylinders and clean the deck with brake cleaner, acetone just before installing the heads making sure nothing seaped down onto the rings.
