I heard their main engine builder, who originally came from Innovation, went out on his own.

Yeah, I had heard that also, but I thought the decision was made after NT decided to concentrate on hulls, and use warrantee'd engines..

Yes Ron Potter has decided to go out on his own.
We are not entirely out of the engine business as everyone in the shop other than Ron remained. Engines can still built built and serviced by the same people that have been doing it for the past 3 years.
We originally started our own progam 5 years ago because at the time Mercury had very few product offerings. We felt there were gaps that we could fill.
Since we weren't in the retail engine business we did not need to spend money on marketing, etc and could put all of the money into the best parts available. Basically we could give our customers more for the money.
We also have an in house dyno so we could deliver the HP promised.
In the last two years Mercury Racing has come on strong with new, powerful and hi-tech products. Quite frankly it's tough for a small shop to compete with that type of technology and warranties.
After a review and Ron's desire to move on, we decided that we have a pretty full plate here and felt it was time to scale back the new engine program. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Thanks for clearing it all up Terry. I agree that Merc has filled quite a few voids in their offerings the last couple of years.

For anyone that is interested, Ron Potter has a beautiful facility for high-performance marine engines. I have know Ron personally since 1987 and you will not find a better person to deal with.

I agree. Ron built my trip 850's when he was with Nor Tech. I now have 650 hrs in three years. Had him freshen them up twice and still running strong. Cheers for both Nor Tech and Ron Potter. :D

Terry,

How much of a PITA is it to operate those canopy boats around the dock/ idling in busy waterways/ putting on trailer?
They look awesome but I never considered the operational headaches that could be present.

It would be a real P.I.T.A. without the ability to retract the hardtop.
With it open you can stick your head up and see what's going on.
That thing on the top is a rear facing camera that gives you a full view on a large flat screen on the dash.
