Trailer winch strap failure !
Mine let go while towing.
Now I know why Reggie puts a step in his hulls. It stops the boat from sliding off when the trailer winch strap fails ! That and a safety chain and rear straps. Anyone have a mail order source for a 3" strap ? ed |
Re: Trailer winch strap failure !
Check with Warparty36. I think he sells straps made to order.
Glad you and the boat are OK. |
Re: Trailer winch strap failure !
I would highly recommend using a safety chain with a turnbuckle to secure the bow. The strap is always exposed to the sun in the same place and really wasn't designed to tie the Bow down IMO.
Warparty36 makes custom straps and tie-downs IIRC |
Re: Trailer winch strap failure !
Ditto Wobble,
I always have a safety chain and ratchet strap from the bow eye straight down to the trailer to keep the nose from bouncing. Also a ratchet strap from both stern eyes. |
Re: Trailer winch strap failure !
I got cable stock. Myco.

Re: Trailer winch strap failure !
The worst part about the whole strap deal is that only first few inches of it are ever bad, so you buy a new strap and have 10' of good strap left.... The good part on the other hand is that they are relatively cheap to replace.

Re: Trailer winch strap failure !
Yes, correct on the safety chain, I'ver always had one and it worked. The boat slipped back about 6 " and between the safety chain and hull step in stopped. I'm not sure what the line pull strength is on the safety chain but afterwards I realized the clasp on the chain was way underrated but it held.

Don't say they never break! I almost broke my jaw back in '92 when we were winching up the raceboat (leadsled of a 29' Mirage) and the cable snapped sending the hand crank flying around and hitting the underside of my jaw. :(

I love when the guys have 10000 lb boats with a seatbelt holding in on... |

I like a cable. I had a strap get cut fromt he boat bouncing up and down. The bad part was, I was headed up the Sunshine Skyway when it came broke. I made it to the other side, thank goodness I had some log chain and a come along in my truck.

I try not to let the cable get to old so it want break.Maybe not never but of 16 years knock on wood.I don't like the strapsbecause of the sun gets to that exposed part. |

Re: Trailer winch strap failure !
I have always used 3/8 spectra on my winches.10,ooo lb test and does not stretch so if it were to ever break it would simply fall not whip.Cable and straps scare the living hell out of me when it comes time to crank a boat up on trailer during low tide and engine failure. Also you can reverse the line or trim it back and reattache your hook to keep it fresh.Works great with a pulleye and a hook on the boweye to get a 2 to 1 advantage when you really need some pulling power .

I clamp a towel near the bow hook on the winch cable in the event of a cable failure it should slow the cable recoil. I use a electric winch. |
Re: Trailer winch strap failure !
Tommymonza,
Is Spectra a trade name for a woven form of rope ? How do you fasten it to the hook ? ed |
Re: Trailer winch strap failure !
Yes it is a brand name.Mostly used for sailboat halyards because it does not stretch, I used it as parasail towline back when i owned a parasail boat, it is incredibily strong for the size and weight of the line.I used to just tie a bowline onto the bow eye because i have a real fear of hooks breaking also but you can tie a bowline to your hook or if you want to get fancy it is real easy to splice a loop into.Kinda like doing the old chinese finger torture thing.Just poke a hole throught the braid about 8 inches back and insert the bitter end of the line throught that hole and feed it inside the line for a few inches and than exit the line. When you apply tension to the line it will clamp down on itself.I have had old spectra snap on me and it just falls like a wet noodle.

Re: Trailer winch strap failure !
Tommymonza,
