Agreed. So if we're posting pictures of people doing stupid things during poker runs, post pictures of the boat that gets to a stop first, or finishes the Poker Run first, because they were definitely racing.

I don't see where I excused their behavior. In fact, I said it was inappropriate. My overall point is that high speeds and racing are bigger contributors to deaths/accidents in Poker Runs than are people sitting on sun pads.

Different than a poker runs I know, but Actually according to the Coast Guard, excessive speed is attributed only to about 8% of boating accidents/deaths. Carelessness and operator inattention are far more.

whoa, back the cart up here for a minute before you guys jump all over steve. Steve has put on the jammin on the james poker run for years. I have never been to a more organized run, where people were respectful and followed the rules, amybe it was the quality of the people that attended but if you look at the history of his and the RPBA runs you see no blemishes. The one time that someone did something that warded any attention from Steve, it was handled quickly and effeciently. All these persons on here touting how "safe" their runs are. The proof is in the one that speaks softly and has the record to back it up...

Cignificant,

Getting to a card stop "first" doesn't mean you were "racing." Going fast during a poker run doesn't mean you were racing.

Competing with others to get there first is racing. If your goal is to "beat" everyone to a card stop, you are racing. And you are racing in an event without proper safety equipment or safety crews or racing rules. And you are racing in event where most everyone else isn't racing.

If my boat cruises safely at 120 mph, and the rest of the fleet cruises safely at 90 mph, chances are I will get to the card stops "first." But it does not mean I'm racing.

Regarding the sunpad thing ... yes, speed contributes to accidents. But carelessness, as pointed out above, contributes more. Doing things like riding on a sunpad when a boat is moving merely increases the risk in an activity that already has inherent risks ... going fast in a boat does come with a certain risk level.

Crossing the street has a certain risk level, too, you might say. And you would be right. But doing it with your eyes closed ups the risk, don't you think? Same could be said for doing something particularly unsafe on a performance boat.

I don't think anyone here has jumped on anyone. People are just making a few points. I enjoy the exchange here and I'm learning from it.

100-Plus

Very interesting logic, so since a boat can cruise at 120mph that means its safe to run 120mph at a PR???? HHHMM I know of a few 140mph boats that thought the same thing and their no longer with us, wouldn't you agree at 100plus speeds it would be hard to avoid another 100plus boat?? HHHMM again I don't attend PR anymore. I'll take an idiot on a sunpad or even a drunk running 40mph, than a huge ego running 120,140,160mph. But thats just me.

Not saying theirs anything wrong with going as fast as you want as long as its in a safe enviroment.

OK to disagree
