Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
Just got my new issue. In the Editor's Report,he states that Terry Rinker dominated ChampBoat Racing last season and he should back off on the throttle next year and let someone else win  Says it would be good for the sport  What is this guy smokin? You work hard to build a winning team and back off? Then why race at all? I don't follow ChampBoats that much, but if Terry and his team are that good, more power to them. Has PB forgotten,or did thay ever understand ,the reason racers race?

Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
I read that last night and thought the same thing. He didnt get to be that dominant in his series by "backing off the pedal".

Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
I read that this morning and thought exactly the same thing.
What the hell is this turning into?? Is this meaning you have to also pick the fat slow kid with no co-ordination first on the playground when playing basketball... It's bad enough we are forcing this to happen in the schools - now, a comment like that means it is reaching "professional" sports too??? I think instead of Rinker pulling back on the sticks, the other teams need to be working alot harder than they already are to figure out how to beat him. And if the slow, fat kid really wants to play basketball, he should lose some weight and work on his game. If it's really a problem, and the playing field is somehow uneven in Rinker's advantage (??? I don't know how ???), then the sanctioning body should get involved - and I hate to make the normal NASCAR reference, but - like Nascar did back in the 70's when Dodge was running the winged Daytona's. |
Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
Kinda like boat racing affirmative action!!!

Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
The problem with ChampBoat is not Terry Rinker dominating, which without a doubt he did this past year. The problem is the number of teams in ChampBoat. I have followed CB for many years and it is not all that exciting anymore. A bunch of the big names are gone. I think part of the reason Rinker did so well was that the talent is not what it used to be. With all that being said, keep an eye out for Timmy Seebold. I have a feeling he will have something up his sleeve for Terry.

Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
The Patriots have won enough Super Bowls now maybe they should lay back and let some other teams win the next few years.
|
Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
Maybe he was being sarcastic....I read it also....why back off so someone else can win???? This whole country's got the same attitude, hence: VietNam, Korea, The Middle east, affirmitave action, "political correctness"....speed limits that modern cars (and boats) idle at, etc........... Remember: When you're gonna shoot....SHOOT, don't talk ! :evilb:

Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
Eric,I thought about that. Went back and re-read the whole page. The Poker Run comment was spot on,the Key West World's comment was spot on.The APBA Mission was weird, but seemed serious. So I have no reason to believe there was sarcasm in the Rinker article. But I might be wrong, what does everyone think, sarcasm or not?

Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
Timmy Seebold, did he manufacture his own boat? There is a 33ft. Seabold boat for sale here in Vegas. Is that one in the same?
|
Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
It's getting to be that kind of world. Maybe we should just stop awarding trophies for first, second and third. Just give everyone a participation trophy. We're all winners for participating. :(
Whoopeeeeee........................ |

Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
I was reading more of the mag this morning, and I've come to the conclusion that every boat they test is a great boat. Never a bad one.
And it truely is amazing how much Teague equipment exists on the test boats vs. what you see out on the water, or the showroom. Not a knock against Teague or his/their equipment, but the only place I hear about it is in PB mag. Is anyone here running Teague stuff?? Also, after the editorial comment - did anyone see the irony of the advertisment on the inside of the back cover  |
Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
Regarding this month's issue - on the front cover they tease the article:
HOW TO: SAVE YOUR OUTDRIVE I have searched cover to cover in that magazine but cannot find any article about saving your outdrive. Am I just missing it or did Powerboat forget to put the article in there? |

Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
I think Power Boat mag editor are smokin crack for some of the things they come up with.
As far as Teague he did the test on the new bat boat by what he said the boat was great. How can you judge your own customer the boat had a Teague drive on it and the next page was a Teague add. If the testing is to be truly considered unbiased then he should have excused himself from this particular test. As any legal judge would in court if he has a previous client come before his bench. The integrity of the test and the judges should be as transparent as possible with the possibility of question otherwise PB mag can talk all they want defending themselves and it will just fall on deff ears. |

Which is really pretty stupid for a mag that trys to cater to the perfomance market - where very, very few boats are left in the water for any lengthy period of time. Not exeactly the sort of thing I'd be too concerned about when the outdrive only gets wet when your using it - not sitting submerged for weeks or months... |
Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
I read Extreme Boat Magazine. I still get Powerboat but I don't read it too much brcause of commentary like that. EBM is much better.

Tim & Bill began manufacturing a fiberglass Mod-VP style tunnel boat in the 1980s (Seebold Eagle) and that eventually turned into a fiberglass boat building company called Seebold Boats (pleasure boats) . That company was sold mid-90's or thereabouts, but the new owner died in a plane crash not long afterward, and the molds then remained in storage for some time. Abilene, TX manufacturer "Emerald Boats" then bought most of those molds around 1998. Tim Seebold still builds boats, but now he only builds racing tunnel boats for the Champ and SST-120 classes - both wood and fiberglass. He's actually just designed a new safety seat for boat racing, to improve side-impact protection (see Nov Hot Boat mag). About the comment made by Powerboat Mag and Terry's total domination -- maybe they are just having flashacks of the Miss Budweiser dynasty which ruined the Unlimited Hydroplane sport? But one dominating season isn't going to chase off the other teams...not yet, anway. Terry and his team really spent a LOT of time testing and tweaking during the offseason, and that's the key to any victory - hard work. BK~ |
Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
Matt Trullio makes interesting comments on the inside back cover. My interpretation of his article is that he is generally using an unfortunate accident to chastise their subscribers.I guess an editor writes things people will read, even if means biting the hand that feeds.

Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
Guess hes got a short memory.......the Seebolds won everything in sight for years

Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
Makes sense to me. When Extreme Exhibit with his quadruple 1300's pulls up next to me in my Sonic, I always throttle down so as not to hurt his feelings.

Re: Powerboat Mag is off the deep end again
The Rinker comment had to more to do with levelizing competition than a true point of view. That having been said, after seeing Rinker's boat run at Hartford....it's a generation ahead of the others. Billy is an old friend and his hulls have stood the test of time no doubt, but that Lee Craft is the next step on the evolutionary ladder IMHO. I agree with the earlier poster that the Seebolds will step up...and soon.
As to PB's overall editorial slant, I must, once again, commend them for taking positions that are topical and controversial. The fact that they may disagree with some of our posters, does not necessarily make them all bad. Heck, I do it all the time. But, the fact that recently they have taken firm positions is refreshing, as opposed to simply gushing about every new personality or product that comes along... There are many other "rags" that are guilty of that. I applaud any deviation from the tired old formulas that we've been exposed to for years.....and not just in magazines. :p T2x |
