MO leads nation in BWI's

I'm a frequent LOTO boater so this really doesn't come as a shock to me.

might have something to do with the number of boats in such a concentrated area.

Re: MO leads nation in BWI's

And the number of bars you can reach by boat.
And the fact it's easy to set up a checkpoint across the whole channel at closing time.
They used to put 12 WP boats out at midnight and have 12 BUIs by 1 AM and take them back to the station. Then they discovered the WP boats could drop the arrested off at a mobile unit on shore and come back out on the water to get more. They can rack up a lot of BUIs sitting a mile off a popular bar when there's limited directions to go from there.
I've been through about 20 checkpoints on the lake (never had a problem) and only 1 in my car.
BTW, they're pushing for 0.08 BAL next year, so ask santa for a breathalizer this year.

When I read the companion article about lowering the BAL, I was wondering how changing the level for BWI would have any effect of those people that fell off the dock and drowned?

'When looking at the 10 fatalities that occurred on Lake of the Ozarks this summer, five involved individuals consuming alcohol and/or drugs who fell off boats or docks and drowned,' Water Patrol Captain Matt Walz said.

Just WTF does falling off the dock or being on drugs and drowning have to do with changing the BAL???? How many of those that fell off the boats and drowned were driving?? this quote is just plain stupid. Either Captian Walz has an agenda or the reporter liked the quote and didn't care that it had nothing to do with BAL and driving.

I could care less whther the law is changed or not but don't just spew forth BS to try to make your case.

Re: MO leads nation in BWI's

I'm surprised that Florida didn't lead it, since we have about four months longer to run boats. I think it is also because we don't have nearly the number of officers to cover all the water in the state. I do know on holiday weekends, they are all over on the St John's River, because it's easier to watch a narrow spot of river, than it is the Atlantic Ocean.

As far as lowering the intoxicated levels, I don't think it will lower the drunk boaters, but it will put more of them in what I refer to as the "Money Machine" which is what the state really wants.

Lowering the level could actually have a reverse effect. Our's here in Florida is currently 0.08, and there was talk about lowering it to 0.05. If they do that, some people might say, hell, I'm already past the legal limit after one beer, so I might as well have twenty.

Re: MO leads nation in BWI's

I agree cuda. I am not trying to justify drinking and boating, but most people can(and do) enjoy a beer and drive. Why have any legal limit if you are just going to keep lowing it? Its all about the $$$ at this point.

Re: MO leads nation in BWI's

I emailed the reporter for the article asking what the BAC levels were for operators involved in accidents. This is the meaningful statistic. She replied that the average was 0.14. Lowering the limit will not solve the problem. Stiffer penalties for the drunks would have a real impact.

You can get busted here in Florida, and have all kinds of charges against you for various things, but usually, if you'll plead guilty to the DUI, they will merge and dismiss the other charges, because they don't have to house you for jail time, and they get to bleed money from you.

Just as a side note, I never drink and drive on the boat, or the road. Not even one. I might get my drink on tonight as a matter of fact, but Debbie doesn't drink, so I always have a DD with me.

Re: MO leads nation in BWI's

As always, when we boat at LOTO I am the DD as I am responsible for my passengers. I do enjoy the freedom of being able to enjoy a beer or two while on the water. I can say I have never approached 0.08, let alone the current limit of 0.10. If they wanted to save lives they should seize the assets (boats) of those that break the current laws. Dropping the limit to 0.08 will do NOTHING to solve the problem.

AND they would make more money than they do from fines.

I like the Sea Ray idea. There's room on board for the clerk, prosecutor and judge. Justice in realtime!!! :D

Water patrol is to busy chasing true criminals here at LOTO like me for being 4 db over the sound limit. But with the danger involved with being to loud you can see why I was pulled over six times in three months.

My wife and I watched many of these LOTO road blocks on Saturday nights from our deck at the Ledges.
They would assemble in my cove at 12:45 am, then set up 12-14 wide from my condo straight accross the lake.
Everyone leaving Shooters 21 was stopped, no one got through, unless they went west. The locals were
aware of the situation and usually had a DD.

The out-of-towners there with just husband and wife in the boat were the ones mostly busted, that and
the pontoon renters full of college kids or military boys on leave that were a real threat on the lake at night.
That's another story I won't go into now.

Never once saw a cruiser get caught. The main reason is that as the WP approached and hit em with the spotlight,
there were usually 3-5 people standing at the bridge, and it was almost impossible to tell who was actually
driving and the owner had a minute or two after he saw the roadblock to figure out who could pass the test.

Ah yes, the good old Aqua Pizza days. Friday night they would set up between Aqua Pizza and Topsiders. Then on the Shooters side saturday night. Been through a lot of those checkpoints!

In the past few years on SML, since a really bad acident a couple years ago, the cops are really bad now. We actually party all day, once the sun goes down we pile on one boat and actually pay a kid 18-21 to be our DD.

Here it comes. Not sure if going from .10 to .08 will affect accidents, but it will probably generate more revenue.

No DD here, I don't even want drunks on my boat. If something happens and the boat goes down, they drown and I don't want that responsibility or law suits either. Its not like a car, if you crash your passengers can sit there until help arrives. If it happens in a boat they can't just sit there, they die.

Panther 02-16-2007 09:31 AM

Not sure if the BAC levels with change anything.. When you guys have places like Party Cove with hot drunk naked women and bars all over the water there's going to be some problems.. They'll start taking those places away and banning the partys on the water and everyone will be pissed.... :(

Steve_H 02-16-2007 12:33 PM

more do-gooder bs. cant legislate stupid away.

tblrklakemo 02-16-2007 02:31 PM

Agreed...I dont like drunks on our boat either. They always come with cigarettes(the ones you inhale) and tend to leave ash all over the side. Finding beer cans on the carpet has a way of pissing me off too.

gsmith9898 02-16-2007 02:56 PM

Why not just ban boats, that would save a bunch of lives. Give big brother a chance and he will make money or fukk it up for everyone.

baywatch 02-16-2007 03:26 PM

I love the part about the drunks smoking on the boat. Who ever thinks it is a good idea to sit on top of a couple hundred gallons of high octane fuel and smoke shouldn't be boating. I love the ones that say they will sit back on the sunpad if they can smoke, sure is kind of funny that underneath that pad is where fuel vapors accumulate (hence the blowers).

You just can't teach stupid and that is why the BAL legislation isn't gonna do squat but make me afraid to have a beer with my Pizza on Saturday afternoon at Franky and Louies (spending quality time with my wife and son).
