With an intercooler and reprogramming, it's easy to pull 700 reliable horsepower out of them. The blowers do need to be refurbished every 100/150 hours. If they have the stock 4" drive pulley 150 is OK. If they are running 3.5" or less, I recommend 100. The Blower Shop does this for me. AZSM and Whipple both have good ECU recurves for these motors. We've had customers go in excess of 300 hrs. with good preventative-maint. programs...and that doesn't mean babying them. The early ones had a blower base-gasket recall, and Merc sent guys around to retro-fit the updated parts. Good track record IMO.

I have 270 hrs on mine. Had to put new bearings in one of the blowers at about 220 hrs and at 270 both mechanical fuel pumps had to be replaced as the alcohol in the fuel ate away the diaphragm, otherwise they have been great. They look and sound great but do suck the gas.

I had some issues with mine right after I bought the boat. The Merc head gaskets failed and the thermostat cover housing discharge orifices rusted so bad that there was no flow going to the headers. The boat came from a salt water area and I don't think the previous owner flushed them properly.
I had them rebuilt from top to bottom and they are great now. Mine are a long way from stock. They do require good fuel and a lot of it when in the boost range. |

430 hours on two.
Blower rebuild on one at roughly 200 hours due to oil consumption. Keep an eye on diaphragm fuel pumps (easy to do, fuel in clear ventline=replace. Also remove yearly to check oil in the little drive unit and general condition of same). Other than that turn the key and go. Pesky Varmint |

250 Hours with no problems! They are gas hogs, but run sweet!
