Re: Manatee Zones, just don't work
It would seem to me that if a stern drive struck a manatee, at any speed, there would be a skeg mark ahead of and perpendicular to the propeller marks. I suppose it's possible that a prop could hit a manatee without skeg contact, but that does't seem likely. And in that case, the prop cut wouldn't be all that deep.
Shane, is there anything in the reporting or "scientific" literature on this? Seems like common sense to me, but then the greater likelihood of deep-drawing vessels, such as barges and tugs, in shallow water crushing slow-moving mammals also seems like the common sense cause of manatee deaths to me. I have no problem with conservation. I have a big problem with creating rules and solutions that do nothing to addres the problem. Keep this issue right up front, Dean, as you already have. |
