Yes ,another stereo quesion ?
Which one is better ? Rockford or Audiobahn ?
I am looking at the Rockford 400.4 (50Wx4)or 600.4 (75Wx4) Or the audiobahn A4401X (50x4),or Audiobahn A4601X (75x4) . Not sure if I want 50W or 75W . I thought I saw another post where one of you said Audiobahn is better .IS this a good model ? Thanks ,JOE |
I would stick with the Rockford. Is this for the boat or the truck?
Jon |
Oh ya 50 watts should be more then enough as long as it is real power. I only had 25 in my old car and believe me when I tell ya it was LOUD!!! :D :D :D
|
Looking at the specs I see the 75Wx4 Rockford has :
THD at Rated RMS Power: 0.05% & Frequency Response: 20-20,000 Hz THe audobahn has :THD at Rated RMS Power: 0.02% & Frequency Response: 10Hz – 40KHz . By these specs ,does that make the audiobahn a better unit ? |
Sorry audiofn , I posted that before I saw your response . I was thinking for the truck ,but for either ? Would you not recomend audiobahn ? THanks .
|
Audiofn, Did you get your truck yet ? Did you figure out where the factory amp is and what size it is ? With these amps I'm talking about ,can you run the speaker wires from the truck (even if it has an amp ) right into the "speaker level inputs " on the amp ?

Boot: I always take the spec sheet and toss it in the trash. It is just a piece of paper that can be manipulated so many different ways it is not funny. I listen to them and talk to lots of dealers that I know and find out what is working for them then formulate my opinion. I do not see the Audiobahn stuff anywere around me, so I can not speak much about it, and maybe that is speaking in a way about the amp. I have not started to look at the stereo system yet and will not untill after the Super Bowl. I am going to go with two 8" or maybe 10" if I am feeling really stupid subs behind the back seat, stock head unit because I do not want to have to worry about theft, and then thaking the speaker levels out and into the amp. If the amp you pick will not handle the high level inputs into the RCA's then you can buy what is called a high to low level converter and you will be ok.

If you are worried about radio theft, purchase an Eclipse. Eclipse has a feature that you program in an audio cd and if ever you remove the radio you must insert the same audio cd fo the unit to work again. The feature makes the radio worthless once stolen therefore many thieves wont steal an Eclipse.
If you are going to use the factory radio, I would suggest an Xtant amp as it has variable balanced inputs to match better to a factory radio. I was not a big fan on Audiobahn until last month. I had two customers that insisted on purchasing Audiobahn and rather than risking to loose the sale, I ordered in Audiobahn. Typically, I recommend brands that are tried and tested but must admit that in both installations, everyone was bewildered. My installation team all agreed that the 1200 watt amps pounded and kept great control of the subs and the 75 x 4 amp actually was clear and loud. The gains were only set about 1/4 of the way up yet the amps sure were eager to make juice. If anyone wants Audiobahn, Orion, Nakamichi, Panasonic, Soundstream, or many others feel free to email and I'll get you a deal. |
Andy Buzz. I agree that the eclips deal is nice, however I just to now want to change the look of the dash, now sure why maybe I am getting old, or it could be the 1800 buck Zapco amp and 800 buck sub box that will be behind the seat!!! The problem with the eclips like the kenwood flip or any of the other amps is that most theaves will steal the thing anyhow and find out later that it is junk. So you are still out a radio :( :(

There are two types of thieves. The crackhead theif is one. The knowledgeable thief is the other. A crackhead will steal given the opportunity. A knowlegable thief is far more common. It is important to realize that the same thief that steals at night sells radios by day. Most thieves know brands, models, prices, features, etc. They can peddle better that way knowing what points will justify price to make their thefts most profitable. The knowledable thief won't bother to steal what he can't resell. A locked up radio is worthless and by discouraging the theft you save the broken window and dash.
The alternative is to either not enjoy a good sound system or buy a detachable face that most never remove or commonly leave in car. There is no perfect solution but with amps bolted under seats requiring seat removal(too time consuming for a thief), a coded Eclipse radio(worthless) and a properly installed security system, you can have your cake and eat it too. |
I've never liked fosgate, I think they are way too much hype for what you get...And over priced!! (sorry Jon) ;)
I've seen some of the audiobahn stuff at car shows and sound offs. Their stuff is real nice and is getting really popular out here in so. cal. I personally run in my suburban, JL subs (12) MB quart mids and highs (10) and PPI amps (2) and one big ass Xtant amp for all the subs. I have in the boat MB Quart mids highs, And PPI subs & amps. I really like PPI's stuff and it seems they were made to go with JL Audio subs!! :D ;) Oh and their stuff lasts forever! I still have a first generation PPI amp that must be around an 89 model, still kickin! From what everyone is saying on this board Babb speakers are the way to go. I've never seen them out here! Tank |
I have a buddy that just redid his subs with Audiobahn. They sound, good, nice and tight. They make some really cool looking subs too.
I have an Eclipse head unit in my car and haven't had a problem with theft. I don't have an alarm system and don't want one, that's one of the reason's I went with the Eclipse. Like Andy said most thieves know their ****. I live in a pretty un-populated area. Any car audio thefts here are most likely by guys that know my head unit is junk to them. Mine is set to a cd that a thief wouldn't figure out in a thousand years. |
Tank PPI definatly makes some good amps. Unfortunatly they have about disapeared off the face of the earth on the east cost. There used to be a bunch of stores that sold the stuff out this way not no one does :( :( :(
|
Now you had to go and complicate things with PPI ! THanks Tank ! NOw I have to reseach them too !
Oh well ,gives me something to do when the board is slow . Thanks guys ! |
Sorry Boot! :D I've just had excellent success with PPI. I've been into systems for about 14 years now and have always dug PPI. But it doesnt sound like it's going to really be an option for you if you can't get them out there like Jon said. But check them out anyway. If you need a brochure I can get one mailed to you.

The PPI amps are very good but they sold to a company that ran them in the ground. Directed electronics bought PPI, Orion, and ADS from this companyand will turn things around. I have their dealer packet and was approved to be a dealer again the new product line looks nice. Forrest

I had an interesting conversation with a guy today that I would say is real up on electronics .( Not that you guys aren't) :D But he told me he thought that Rockford has gone way down hill and has become Walmart quality . Just another opinoin of coarse !
Keep it comeing now ! I am completly confused ! :( |
I had been a PPI dealer for years. The PPI stuff you were so satisfied with from years ago was engineered by people with a completely different philosophy than what has been made by PPI in the past few years. Old PPI was excellent. The engineers left and went to work for Xtant. The new PPI was made offshore and most dealers stopped carrying the line. The company was bought by ADST who also owns Orion. PPI died. Directed should do a good job reviving the company but you will not see PPI like the old stuff again.
Directed currently makes amps that are very good. I stock and sell the entire line. |
Forrest,
I heard the same thing happened with Fosgate a few years back. That they were bought out by a big company and their quality went down. I recall seeing a couple of the fosgate amps with the old "swap meet special"....Big housing for the amp with no guts. But again, I never did really like fosgate. ;) Tank |
Hey Tank when I finally make it out to Cali and we hook up do not worry when the first thing you feel is my foot hitting you in the nuts!!!! :p :p :p
|
hey folks! the Babb stuff is good. Ihave installed quite a few of them. They lack the good crisp highs. I believe they cut off at about 18 -20khz. A good set of tweets will get you back in the game. Is fosbreak screwing up again?????????? Havent used it in about 4 years.
|
Hey Tank I did hear the same thing but I never sold them and never really had to compete against them in sales so I guess I never paid attention to the rumors. One of the head engineers for PPI that designed the flat piston woofers went to work for Kicker. The guy who I think Directed made a V.P. is one of the only PPI people to stay with the company through the whole change over. He started at PPI milling the heat sinks from what my rep told me. Good success story. I don't sell the Audiobahns but I have not heard a lot of good things about them. I do know they are expensive. Look at the MMATS or Zapco amps also.
Andy How do the Nak amps sound? I haven't used them though I can sell them. Forrest |
