The Law Finally Caught Up With Me!

Here's a first.
Today I launch at the SR 951 ramp and am idling down the canal that parallels the highway when a Collier County Sheriff comes screaming past with lights flashing. Runs down the canal bank and flags me down. Takes down my name, reg. no. & wants to know where I keep the boat etc. etc. Thanks me for my co-operation and says I'm free to go.
Puzzled , I ask if there is a problem ? He explains with the rash of Cubans now finding there way to Florida's west coast they are trying to keep track of go fasts capable of going to Cuba and back. Told him, ya, I can do that ! He laughed. :D
Month ago Homeland Security stopped me offshore of Naples. They were polite too and said, were sure glad you stopped cause we couldn't catch you ! LOL
Guess we can expect more of the same in the future.

My 38TE center console Fountain has a 425 gallon fuel tank (over 500 miles at cruise) and a ton of storage room, 2 chartplotters and radar. The triple 275 Verado's are stealth quiet too. These are the boats they really should look out for.

Your right Mike. Next time I will put them onto you !! LOL I was surprised that there have been landings as far north as Sarasota.
I was always intrigued by the thought of going to Cuba. Have talked to different ones including Customs in Key West about doing the trip. Bought all the charts and guide. Started for Key West once with the thought of making the crossing from there and it just got too rough and decided against it. Also had concerns that Castro just might like my boat for a coastal patrol vessel.

I've got a real life story about someone that made the trip to cuba on a 21' Bayliner. Unreal circumstances. This story was shared to me by someone who was part of the investigation after the fact......

Bob, I had a similiar experience, I was in a 36 Concept in front of Snook Inn, was stopped and asked where I was from and where I was going. I heard later from my friend at Cedar Bay that because I am dark and Have that look the Sherriff thought he was on to something, Had I of known I would have messed with them a bit. Happy Holidays maybe I will see you out on the water.

Bob

Imagine if they are out during our New Years' Day Fun Run.
They will think they struck the mother load.

By the way Bob, the choppers can catch any of us. A USCG flew along side me last year snapping a couple pics as we were cruisng at 100mph.

Re: The Law Finally Caught Up With Me!

We had a CG helicopter follow us on Lake Michigan once. We were heading south toward Cuba, but ran out of water at Michigan. We found out those choppers are lot faster than the Poker Run flyers we out run. They were waving and smiling.

I couple years ago we were out on the Potomac River heading into DC and a large shadow came up over the top of us. I thought a big cloud had rolled overhead. We were running WFO, so the noise and wind was not evident. However, as I took a peak over my shoulder; THIS:

was about 15 feet off of the sunpad. It was close enough that I could count the rivets on the front, and see the whites of the crew's eyes. They were egging my girlfriend at the time to give them a flash. It was quite the moment.

I have an old frat buddy that was working for a boat dealer in S FL and was running a boat about 30 miles S of the keys when the boat sank. He was picked up by a Cuban troller and brought back to Cuba were he had to hide out for 3 weeks before he could get back to the US. He said it was the best time he has ever hadand the people were very hospitable.

Re: The Law Finally Caught Up With Me!

back in the hot coke smuggling days and the Mariel boat lift everytime my mom and dad went fishing in his Bertram and they went offshore they would get stopped every single time they came back in by the Coast Guard.
They were very nice and apoligetic but still searched the boat every single time.
I went to Bimini in a 24 Mako with twin outboards for the day ,left around 5am, came back late afternoon heading back to have some drinks at Montys in the grove (late 80s) when we hit Biscayne Bay there was a chopper, cutter and RIB loaded with guys with machine guns waiting for us. Took us back to the marina, took the boat apart and put it back together , Thanked us for cooperating and left.. Needless to say we no longer felt like having that drink.. they never even asked us why we didnt check in at Customs..
