Help with shipping a 7' box. CT to MS

Anyone know the best way to ship a 70lb, 7'x2'x18" box (marine radar) from CT to Gulfport MS?
UPS can't do it, FedEx can't so I have been calling places like Roadway, yellow freight etc. I'm getting $300-$400 quotes. There must be a beter way. I sold my old radar to a guy & told him shipping would be around $150.
Any big ideas?
Thanks!
Dave

Forward Air is great. They are a trucking company with terminals at most major airports in the US. I've shipped many motorcycles with them. Very resonable.

Ah hah!! Thanks guys!! I tried Delta air cargo because I've shipped many outdrives in the past. They obviously told me after 9/11 they can't do it anymore. I'll try forward air.
Thanks!

Forward air is fantastic. I think that they even will do door to door now. Door to door is going to be a LOT more expensive. Are you trying to get quotes to drop off at residential or business? They do charge a LOT more to do residential and also if they need a lift gate. If the guy says that he can lift the 70 pound package then tell them that he has a loading dock as well as your place when you have it picked up. All that crap adds to the cost.

Wow! They quoted $117.00 but the closest airport is in Mobile ALabama. I called the guy & he said that Mobile is over an hour and a half away.
I'll try other air freight companies.
Thanks again

Call the carrier you want to send it with and talk to them about moving your business from another trucking company you have issues with. You should get 40% off the top. I only ship 2 or 3 LTL parcels a month and I "move" all the time.

Tax Man, thanks for the message and thanks to Biggus also.
I worked it all out. I'm dropping off everything to Forward Air tomorrow at JFK airport (I have to take my parents there at 12 anyway!!) and they will drop it in Mobile AL. Quick Delivery will pick it up (Thanks Tax Man!!) and drop it off in Gulfport MS for $50.00

Air Freight $117.00
Ground transport $50.00

Not paying $300 or so out of my pocket and having the shippment in the buyers hands within 2 days when he thought it would take 7: priceless

Ya know, there is very little that can't be done with all of the know how on this board.
Thanks everyone!!
Dave

dave,

bring money orders. As i recall they dont; take cash, or credit cards. They might take personal checks. I know i had a problem with them once and had the joy of cruisign around the surrounding neighborhoods of JFK looking for an ATM at like midnight. I wound up at a check's cashed and i felt like i was abotu to robbed at gunpoint at any minute.....

Well Puder, I showed up, weighed in, filled out paperwork & then it came time for payment. I had credit cards, personal checks, business checks, cash, peso's, gold dubloons. krugerands & Euro. No go! I ended up at the same check cash place you went to for a money order. I defenately wouldn't want to be there when the sun goes down:eek:

Try GreyHound bus lines, , They ship large packages under in the luggage hold, I think its right around the same price of the one-way bus ticket. I had a ford f150 bumper shipped that way pretty cheap.
