A boat like this could run 130 with 850s or even a "race" Skater v-hull.

Arrow What are we doing wrong?

All this talk of 42 Fountains going over 130 on that type of power is facinating. Here are some benchmarks:

Our boat is a 2000 42 Fountain with the superventilated hull(very efficient but safety is always a concern at these speeds), K-planes turned flat, #6 Drives . For power we have staggered full race, best of everything, dynoed at just under 1100HP on race fuel with the boost turned up to to a comfortable point. In the boat we have it set up at 975HP to keep things happy with 92 Octane.

On a good day with a 2' chop and 2 people on board on Lake Superior we are lucky to see 116mph on the GPS.

My friend has the 1997 high speed hull on his 42 Fountain. He has it in for a few minor tweaks at Fountain now to make it exactly like the highly successful 2005 high speed hull which is its decendant. Equipment includes #6 Drives with about 1300HP built, rigged and tuned by the man (Mr. Teague).

On a good day on Lake Superior, this package has seen 122mph on GPS. After the hull tweaks (water pickups being a primary factor) we think we might see up to 135mph given the same power.

Recently Randy arranged a ride for me in one of his new 39 MTI cats with merc 850's. I saw 128 on the GPS in Miami and there wasn't much more to go with the props we were using.

I'm sure some of you have more experience than we do and can dial things in a little better but I'm struggling with the idea that a 42 Fountain can go 130mph with 850's. If the new 42 Fountains can do that, it's time for me to quit goofing with this one and get some new technology. The problem with that is I understand the 2005 hull was as good as it get's. When you guys start blowing by me with 850's I'm going to have a 42 for sale with no power as I drop the little beasts into a 44 MTI so I can keep up.

I thought maybe the liquid technologies V, fountain V or the GTX outerlimits . Skater might get there. I would think the MTI should hit 140mph with merc 850's The 36 nortech has hit 137 with 850's

If I am correct, you rode in the 850 MTI that was at the Miami Show. That boat has a very different set up then most. It is extremely fast on the top end, just not with the wt. you had and the drivers were not at all familiar with that set up.A typical 39 with 850's and a good all around set-up will run 145.

Yes that's the one. I knew it would go faster and they didn't have it set up for an optimal result. I just wanted to keep that quiet so when I have to move to the 44 to keep all these guys from going by me with 850's in thier V's I'll have plenty of mph in reserve with 1100's. Thanks!
