Sit or Stand?
Whats your preferance for Bolsters/Seats? For me i like to stand in mine. Use my legs as shock absorbers so to speak. But i have been on a few boats that dont have the drop outs. It was a nice ride but we werent in anything "hairy" to see what they were like. I have had a few VERY rough landings that hurt my insides! And i can imagine what it must feel like when sitting down! How do the pros handle pounding in the rough stuff in those big 46' cats sitting down? Or does the size of the boat kinda kill the big waves?
|
ooooooohhhhhhh your talking about driving!!! I thought it was a gender thing!!!LOL I've got the bad back ..Stand up bolsters!! ;) :D
|
Depends on the boat. Like an outlaw 25 I prefer to sit. Driving my cousins 342, I prefer to stand and look over the windsheild because of the distortion.
|
Standing of course!!! I've sat in the Cat Can Do Skater. The seat was real comfortable, and there was a really good foot support to brace against. You don't really "sit" in it. You are more or less "hugged" into it.
|
I prefer to stand as well. Gives me a better overall view of what is around me plus I get a nice breeze off the fairing :)
About the only time I am sitting is if water conditions are smooth and we are just out cruising around. |
I like to sit. Only because I found that I tend to lock my knees. Which wouldn't be good during that hard landing when my legs became double jointed.
|
I prefer to stand. It's easier on this OLD body when things get bumpy. My wife would rather sit with feet on foot rests.
|
Standing is great for pleasure boats but sitting has much better control. I don't know how guys like Fast Eddie sit and take the pounding. In an boat with a canopy the key is to have a 5 point harness that is pulled so tight that there is no way your ass can leave the seat. As long as you move with the boat and have good firm padding, you never get beat up. Kinda like riding a horse.
|
My 22' Senza had sit down seats, and my 32' Pachanga has the drop down bolsters. I prefer to stand myself...
|
When running longer trips, I'll set the boat to run nice and smooth and sit. If we run hard, I like to stand/slant. It's easier to cushion with my legs on hard landings. Although, you'd think as big as my ass is, it would be the other way around ;)
Do guys in race boats wear jock straps? I can see how the need would arise. er uh..you know what I mean....bad choice of words.... Mark |
wally I think it was Daytona race big seas throttel man takes spinal compression but hanges in there not long after again bad compression has to bail out of boat to try to releave pain.these guys are tuff.I think without being straped down you would be snaped around, and I think that would be worse, not as much control over boat and hard on the body. I like my drop outs and they work well for my type of driving-non raceing.,I,m still new to a lot of it and have not looked inside of any well set up race boats.any drivers want to clue me in on how you do it? re;eat nails before you race, drink rusty water instead of coffee.? :D
|
I like to stand, but in my boats there is only sitting. If I stood up the windsheild is at my waist  I have been in many bolsters and there is nothing better then standing.
In both the baja and powerplay there are only sitting arangements. When i sit I like to become one with the boat, tucked in the seat good and tight, feet wide stanced on the foot rest, not be able to move at all. I feel like I am in my own little world, me and the boat becoming one.. then ya just slam the stick to the stop, trim her up and give er' hell :D :D :D Travis [ 01-23-2002: Message edited by: traviss ] |
STAND BABY!!! And you better hold on tight!!
Especially when I do a 70+ mph river assault on sunday when there is 3-5 foot chop!!! [ 01-23-2002: Message edited by: Bigwavz ] |
I have raced both sit down boats and stand up boats. I much prefer sitting. Especially when you are in Skater seats. They really hug you and you feel at one with the boat. There is a TREMENDOUS amount of padding in the seats that are made by Skater and they absorb alot of the shock. I do not feel as in control standing but that is just my personal preference.
Shane  |
Too Old,
How are you my friend? I hope you and the family are all well. How come you were looking at selling the Skater? Shane  |
It seems like most of us go fast pleasure boaters like to stand. I wish they would make boats like for instance Powerquests new 32' SC with a pair of bolsters with that big open cockpit. That way we can go out and pound around on Friday night with the guys then take the family out on Saturday.
Some of the new layouts are great, you just can't get the right seats. Is it just me or does anybody else feel like we're missing a good cross over boat? |
Standing with feet pushing against footrest, knees slightly bent.
|
TurnItOn, I agree with you on the crossover boat. My boat is only 24' but the cockpit space would rival that of a Top Gun, maybe bigger. Mine has buckets and I thought of bolsters but I like that mine swivel around and I can lounge out in them. You lose that with bolsters. I do however stand in front of the seat most of the time. It's a damn good thing my steering wheel is on tight, it and my throttles are the only thing that keep me standing upright some times!
I really like the 32' Advantage for the cockpit space. You can have 4 bolsters and the back bench of just the 2 bolsters and bench and you have a small dance floor in between them. I'd happily give up some cabin in a 32'+ boat to get that cockpit space. |
SHANE
I TOO HAVE RACED SITTING AND STANDING AND AGREE WITH YOU 100%. YOU FEEL LIKE PART OF THE BOAT SITTING DOWN. B.J. |
In my Velocity I sat and liked it..you definately feel more a part of the boat..I stand in the Sutphen I raced this year..takes some getting used-to..with the big jacket on I was pretty well wedged-in..but I did manage to fall through once!
  |
For me it depends on how I am running, in the rough screamin along I stand, knees bent. When out for a cruise with the wife and kids i like to sit my fat ass down. It really depnends on the water and who my passangers are. :D :D
|
I definately prefer sitting. especialy in a good seat. Of all the seats I've been in Apache seats are the best.
|
I like to stand. It gives me a better view and when running hard seems safer.
Jon |
My boats have always had bucket seats in them and I haven't spent that much time in one with bolsters. Guess I need to get out on more boats :D
|
I also like to stand feels nice and secure in the bolster.
|
under 50, stand.
over 50, sit and pray. From some data collected over the years, 46 skater good 31 class 2 cat bad. biggers better, of course. 9 g's common on 3-4 day. If you weigh 100 that is 900 for your legs to take and spine. Its a toss up I like to sit. The faster you go the better, you tend to skip not stick. MTI has shock seats developed at Victory Team. They take the big bumps. Shortish answer, wife sleeping me surfing. pat W :D :D :D :D |
ronp--i will have to tell ny dad to add 5 point harness s to all his horse saddles :D I agree with Milord, the smaller-pleasure boats tend to have a lot of floor space. the 23 chris that i use to run was 1.5 xs more. When i went out in 5 footers--the fun stuff, i would just pull the captains chair out of the mounts and stand. it will sure be nice now with these bolsters. :)

del sol,
Do you know flip flop Phil? |
I feel it is all in the seat itself. If you can find or custom make a good one, it is way more comfortable, secure, and allows one to push the boat to the next level.
Chris Reindl |
Would prefer to sit down in Skater Styled seats with a foot throttle.
|
I've got an older daycruiser type boat. The floor of the cockpit would have to be changed for a stand up bolster. I've got some custom built sitdown/ wraparound captains chairs. Not quite a bolster. They hold you in place very well and have a lot of padding. I sit up high enough visibility is never a problem, but then I'm 6'6" tall. Sometimes I would like the option to stand, but I think my dash and controls would all be a bit of a reach then.
Hey I can even swivel them!! |
I think Shane hit it on the head.
I've raced standing in both Super V and Factory 1, but have driven a number of race boats with custom "sit down" seats. I used to think standing was the way to go, especially in big water. But with some of the new seats out there, my next race boat will be a sit down boat. |
STANDING - You have more control + save your back!
AC :D :D |
Ya scott I know Phil, usually down at the Seacliff at least once a week, that's his inn/bar. Good -guy, always end up laughin after talkin to him. How do you know him--obviously from boating - but kelley's/bay??
He was saying that the cleveland show was pretty good this year,--he went last week end. I was thinkin of heading that way on saturday, always a good time at the flats :D |
I like to sit and adjust the electric to comfort.
|
Without reading all the above, let me say this:
Sitting places approximatley 7 times more stress on the lumbar spine than standing. Add to that the force of offshore boating and you'll know why I will be in the market for some bolster seats in the near future. |
Intolerant,
With the old style, (regular) seats, I agree. I was referring to the newer seats that are in a somewhat reclined position with a BUTTLOAD of progressive density foam in the seat bottom and back. |
V,standing because its got no suspension.
cat,sitting because its got "airshocks" :D |
