The one you change before its time:drink:
Seriously, everyone will have an opinion on what orks for them, but the truth is none of them will protect your engine like new oil. Change every 25 hours and that is the best protection you can give your engine!!

Interesting article on the Zinc removal in HOTROD Engine Mag. Here's a partial summary.

Re: Best oil

We need Hydrocruiser in this thread?

Aero Shell I'm thinking maybe a good way to go???

Shell oil say's

AeroShell Oil W 15W-50
This multi-viscosity grade, ashless dispersant pitons engine oil is a unique blend of high quality mineral oil and synthetic hydrocarbon base stocks. Formulated to provide anti-wear and anti-corrosion protection, this oil offers you better lubricant performance from start-up through to high temperature operation. AeroShell W 15W-50 is considered to be superior to single grade oils in most applications.
The reason I'm asking is would not an oil formulated under more strict guidelines over automotive be better in a "harsh" marine enviroment? Gotta like the anti-corrosion additives protection claims, also benificial in the marine arena, I'd reckon..........

so what weight oil do most of you guys run - i have a merc 496 dynoed at 570hp - no charger - its a tyler crocket build. like in central ny - so i have some ocasional cold morining start ups - but it does have a pre-oiler.

Ask Tyler what he reccomends... I use 15-50 M1 and In general I would say you cant go wrong with it, the 20-50 V-twin seems to be popular also but is on the expensive side at 7+ / quart..

Mobil 1 goes in everything I own.

I have a shop truck that just turned 400K. '96 350 Chev. Never as much as had the valve cover off of it. Uses about a quart in 5K. I change every 10K.

Rotella T 15-40 in flat tappet boat engines and 2006 PSD. I had trouble with cams before this when running M1 15-50. This will now be the third season with these engines and running rotella. If you have oil temps that exceed 250f as an upper limit, use the synthetic rotella.
