I thought the innards were a bit more beefed up on the 3A as well.

Tank I think you are right, I thought the 3A's ran the same gear sets and size shafts that the #5's run, but they are just longer.

I do know that the shafts are the same size as #6's but are slightly different behind the spline (tapered on the 3a). #6 props will fit the 3A's. and I do think the verticals are the same size as 6's as well.

Thats correct and no taper on the #3a. The taper was the week spot on the 3s& 4s once they statered running them on the surface!I know this from having many props on the bottom of the lake.
Copied #6 outer and # 4 inner never broke another shaft.
