Default Anyone runing 2.5 offshores?

Thinking of trading my 31 fountain .c.c. For a 30 spectre with trip 2.5s. with 60 hrs. on power heads. What do you think? How many hrs. before rebuild? The seller states that all cyl. in all 3 mot. have 160 # or bet. Im just learning outboards.
my 250 efis eat more fuel and oil than my hot roded 500efis in my 390 velocity. But I hate that fountain! Im not a center console guy!

Run a leakdown. The hrs dont mean much, they will last a long time if you keep them below 5k, over 5k they dont last very long.

They get terrible gas mileage, and I mean terrible.

what year and what size 2.5's? and why triples, if their 280's you should only need 2, and if they are they run great, as far as time before rebuild it depends on how they are ran but all in all their good motors

I have owned and blown a lot 2.5's 260-280hp. I never had real good luck getting much more than 100 hours out of them. But I ran them hard all the time. As for gas mileage my triple 280 cat always did better than the I/O's at the poker runs. The 280 is a nice package with the new boxes they start and idle great. They also have a alternator. The older 260's have a stator and will not keep up with the batteries. Need to charge frequently.
They are a lot of fun, quick and easy to fix, but they will wear out.

O agree are these 2.5 efi race motors/offshore.... There have been a few flavors over the years. They will run good, they use a LOT of oil if they are 280's and you have to mix. I think that we ran 30:1 on the race boat if I remember correctly. If they are the 280 flavor like copiercat said I would take one off and keep it as a spare, you will not need the third.....

they goota be 260's then because the 280 didnt come out till late 90's, what kind of lower units?if they have cle's or sportmasters, that is the other weak link the sporties are the best and fat shafts are very reliable, the 260 dont charge well as was stated but you dont have to run the sythetic oil which will save a fortune in oil cost but really average running i think i would be tearing down after 100 hours, its much cheaper than windowing a motor

Yes Efi's. Plan on 120 hrs on the powerheads before a ring job. There is nothing wrong with the 2.5's just a little older on tech side. My choice would be 300 promaxes or 300x.

You couldnt give me one, you would have to give me 8 so i would have enough to get me through a race season. Last year with only a few boats running them 15 died. This season at the end of race two, 2 dead. They are a piece of **** and you should never buy one or remotely consider a boat that requires them. Dont get me wrong, they go real fast for half a race. Every team has changed to the 300 and one ov them died last weekend as well. Jas
