New boater
Experienced boaters, I am picking up a 87 Regal Velocity in April in the new england area, and will be importing it to Canada. I am a virgin power boater (never owned before) and would like to know if anyone is familiar with that style of boat. I am curious to know if there is any handling issues (I heard they flip easy), and if someone could provide any insight on if their is a best way to learn how to handle the boat on the water (i.e at what speed I should not considering turning at) without going for an unwanted swim. Any insight or direction will be greatly appreciated.

Congrats and welcome!!!!
|
I would recommend that you place a post in the Velocity section. You should be able to get some good input from there.
Good Luck! |
Be very safe.... Start out slow and learn how to work the trim. Listen and feel the boat, if it doesn't feel/sound right it adjust it accordingly.
|
Get out in open water and drop the hammer keep her sraight, trim her up till you feal her get up on the pad she should stay rock solid and fast on that pad. When you turn just trim her in all the way pull back on the stick a touch and turn her left or right and she should dig in as if she was on rails. Straighten up drop the hammer again trim her out and repeat.
Remember Velocitys are a drivers boat the more seat time you have the easyer she will be to drive. Good luck and if you need anything drop a line on the Velocity Thread and let use know. Or give me a pm. Brian TF Surguy |

Congrats on the boat and welcome to OSO. Where are you going to do your boating? I'll be dropping her in the water in the Toronto area. Although most of my wakeboarding/boating experience has been in Burlington where I suspect I will be spending some time this summer. I noticed you are in Oakville, what are you riding on? . . . did you ever cruise to Sharkies, I heard they torn it down and made a condo out of it, damn shame, that was a great boaters restaurant/bar. |
Thanks all for the advice! I look forward to spending more time on this forum. I will try to get a decent picture up sometime soon. Thanks again!
|
Congrats on the new boat . Maybe we will see you this summer . I will be keeping my TG in Toronto for most of the summer .:drink:

Congrats on the boat purchase and welcome to the board. Lots of great info here. When it comes to safety and comfort in driving your boat, it was said best above that it takes seat time to figure out how the boat reacts to different water/trim/speeds/etc. Take a couple of days and a few tanks of gas to learn how you can expect the boat to react and just stay in your comfort zone. My philosophy is to leave the real racing to the guys with racing harnesses and oxygen tanks, not a good way to spend a weekend with the wife and kids. Good luck and be safe. By the way, you just opened up a big pit you never knew you had to throw a lot of money into, but dang it is fun. Hammer

Rooster...what size Velocity and what power?
|
Good Luck ..... and welcome!
The only thing more important than how fast your boat runs is being alive and well to brag about it when your back on shore :evilb: |
rooster,
My boat will be on Lake Nipissing most of the summer, but may keep it at Port Credit or Bronte for a few weekends if there are things going on. Sharkey's is no more, instead we have million dollar condos. Just not fair, I misspent my youth there. |

Indeed. This one will hurt the budget for sure . . . of course what I don't spend on the boat the girlfriend is gonna spend anyway :-) I am going to research the cost of a paint job or Decals this week (whatever is cheapest). I have a lot to learn yet! |

what size , drive, motor, tabs or k planes do you have, if its stock under 70mph, you shouldn't have any chine walk to worry about. why I ask is when I picked up my boat it ran 60, which was fast as hell to me after 2yrs went with a bigger motor 67mph bigger tabs 280s k planes, then about every couple of yrs went bigger, now have have 670hp running 83 will be running a little higher this season bigger prop, but all so ext steering, 380s k planes, nexted will build mster motor but will have a longer hull to put it in. some trade boats every 2yrs me motors:D so what do you have.

Sounds like a fun project. Feel free to give me a call and I can give you ideas of what you can do.

Just a baby at 23.5' with 365horses running under the bed. I know this is sad, but I don't know for sure what the engine is yet. I scored a great deal off a family member who is not all that serious about boating, and only used it one summer. I'll be taking a trip to see the boat next month and close the deal. I am hoping to contact Regal or Velocity to get the spec's on the boat (not sure if they will still have documentation they could send me thou). Next stop will be the velocity forum to see if anyone over there has any details. |

This is outside my league AIR TIME :-( Hopefully after this summer I will know the lingo and be able to answer your question and sound like I know what I'm talking about . . . like you said after you picked up your boat, I'm thinking its gonna seem really fast until I get the feel of how she handles. Yours truly, Amateur Boater :-( |

Those are some very serious custom jobs I viewed in the gallery. I am hoping to have some pics taken of my boat next month when I get back from Boston (where I am picking up the boat in april/may timeframe). I can send them to you with some general ideas of how I think I would like the boat to look. I'm sure I won't do anything as serious as the racing boats on your site, but she will need a paint job as right now the boat looks very dull with the grey/white scheme. Thanks for following up. |

I look forward to hearing from you. A few pics of an 18 foot Silverline I did this past month to fill in time between big jobs. Before and after pics. Solid colors are paint and the graphics are just vinyl. Thanks again, Chris Diamond |

I will be searching the net over the next few months and will note some color schemes. Once I have zoned in on something, we'll chat some more. Thanks. |

It was all red and white (very ugly) before we did this complete paint job on it. The owner at the time hung out at "Snug Harbour" all the time in Port Credit. Again, I look forward to talking with you. Thank You, Chris Diamond |

Here is the only picture I have of the boat, untill the 23rd when I go down to Boston to close the deal. (this is my first picture post so not sure if it is going to work) |

If the engine is completely stock ( with no modifications ) you have what is called a 454 Magnum and you probably have a Bravo One outdrive, both of which are manufactured by Mercruiser. The engine is a General Motors 454 cubic inch V8 that has been marinized and you are not to use regular automobile replacement parts on or in it when replacing something.
Welcome aboard. Cool. I will take some snapshots of the engine when I see the boat march 23rd. I might post them to ask if it looks stock. Before I launch her in spring I will get the real deal from the mechanic I have un-winterize her. |
congrats on the new boat. i just bought a new larson senza for this summer. since there are a bunch of people around toronto I was wondering if anyone here boats around crystal beach on lake erie?

Thanks again, Chris I have seen a lot of different graphics on OSO forum boats and videos, but I am thinking I will want to go with a solid color scheme, the flash is not me . . . not totally sure yet thou, once I get the boat in the water, I might have a different opinion. Here's a few pic's and maybe you can indicate what is involved to have a boat painted, such as time, cost, materials . . . that way I can start budgeting for it. I will want to drive it for awhile before I put it up for any work, but if I know how long it takes I can plan appropriately. Attachment 272330 Attachment 272331 Attachment 272332 |
