Whatza "K" drive?
On my "Legend of Apache" DVD there is an interview with Mark McManus and he is talking about superboat speeds getting faster..."people have those dependable K drives now and there putting the power to them"
What is (was) a K drive? Did he maybe say "a" drive as in 3A? |
before it was the #6 drive it was called the Kiekhafer drive, i have an add some where for it if i remember corectly it was a pic of Carl K sitting next to it in a safari get up and they were calling it a gorilla drive or something likethat.

The Gil Gorilla was an engine package by Gil Marine. 1987-88? Nothing to do with EC Kiekhaefer (he passed away in 1983)
Fred Kiekhaefer designed the Kiekhaefer drive back when he ran Kiekhaefer Areomarine. It was available to qualified race teams in 1988. Brunswick (Mercury) bought Kiekhaefer Aeromarine shorty after and renamed the K drive to the Speedmaster VI. Other than dry-sumping the drive, it's pretty much unchanged since it was designed 20 yrs ago! Kurt |
The WARHAWK 41 APACHE was the first boat to have them installed.
