I had a 21' Checkmate with a 200 Mercury on it back in 86-87. That little boat was bullet proof and alot of fun.

I agree this is a win-win situation. This might be a boost that Checkmate needs to regain the popularity it once had up here. They are great boats!

Me too. I grew up on one, in fact I think it's the model that Baja bought to start making their boats, but I'm not sure. He bought it in 1968 I think. My dad was letting me drive a 70 mph 16' rocket by the time I was 11 or 12, without him in it!!! (he just wanted to hang with his buddies and drink beer) I would like to find the person that bought it from my dad in 1990 and get it back!

Doug's son Courtney was VP of Marketing for Baja prior to Brunswick. After Brunswick put in their own folks,Courtney went to Family and Performance Boating Mag. I thought he might rejoin his dad at Checkmate but I was just told he has changed careers and is invvolved in Indy car racing . Also was told that Checkmate is going to work with McCloud Interiors now. Sounds like Checkmate has a bright future after 45 years with the Combs and Downard families, and now with Doug Smith.I bought my first Checkmate in 1969,lots of good memories. Thanks Bill Combs and Bill Downard

I owned 2 Checkmates,a 25 & a 28. Both were simple
and solid. Great boats. Classic designs that kind of went
out of style in the recent years. This deal should be
great for Checkmate. Hope to see them back in the
limelight again.

Had s 1969 16ft Checkmate with a warmed over 115HP Merc. With a jack plate, it went 63MPH. What a fun boat! I do miss it! Wish Checkmate the best of luck!
