45' Sonic - Anyone know??

Anyone know this 45 Sonic. Been for sale in TX.

http://www.boattraderonline.com/cadd...0/80741780.htm

I am looking for something with some head room but still trailerable. Is the 45 Sonic's beam 8'6"?

Any opinions on this boat or on older or 45' Sonics is appreciated.

Thank you

BajaRunner 03-05-2007 04:52 PM

that is a big phucking boat! You should buy my 36 :D

bford1 03-05-2007 05:08 PM

Yes, well with a new baby now I need something big enough to comfortably spend the weekend on.

Didn't you just upgrade to that 36? Are you selling to upgrade again already?

I new the two previous owners. What would you like to know?

carrboy 03-05-2007 05:18 PM

My 386 is and the 42 is...just go to the sonic website-they have all the specs,I'm 99% certain the 45's beam is the same

bford1 03-05-2007 05:50 PM

TomT I would appreciate any opinions you have. How does it drive? Was it well cared for? Decent quality? Does it really have the 6' of head room Sonic boasts? I have never been on a Somic 45

I know Sonic's quality through the years has gone up and down. Did they like the boat? Any major issues? I'm sure it is a gas hog. We would spend a lot of time on it but not necessarily driving it.

Carrboy - Thank you. I was hoping 8'6" so no permits required.

One buddy purchased it new or was the second owner. It spent most of its life on Lake Conroe a fresh water lake. I saw it get towed to Tickfaw one year. Its alot of boat for the money. I don't think the previous owners used the boat much.

We never got a permit when we took it out.

43Thunder just bought a 45 Sonic, and he worked on them for years at a dealer. He can share a lot of info.

The beam is 8'6". Its a BIG, and I mean BIG, heavy boat. It rides like a pair of Sherman tanks welded together.

crb76 03-05-2007 06:53 PM

That looks like Roy Hunter's old Sonic...If it is, then it is then i should be good. He keeps everything nice.

Totally different boat The one you are think of is this one; owned by Offshore Score here on OSO:

Yes, we have owned three 42s and just bought a 2000 45. YES, they have the head room. Bill is 6'2" and he can stand up to take a shower in the 42/45s. Ask us what you want to know.

I am assuming this thing would drink gas like crazy with the three Hp500s. I need the space for the family and am wondering if this Sonic would be a better option that moving to a cabin cruiser. It seems like a great deal on the boat.

My last boat was a 35 Formula.

Thank you for all of the opinions.

carrboy 03-06-2007 11:01 AM

All depends...what do u consider"gas hog"? My 386 has triple 500 hp's and costs "over" $100 an hour in fuel...hopefully that helps...U might save in the cruiser but if u float more than cruise (sounds like u will have the family a lot) I'd go with the 45...looks better, faster, u can trailer, and if u buy it right u won't lose as much at resale time and it's easier to work on too.

bford1 03-07-2007 10:38 AM

I always looked at the gas as a weekend thing. My 357 Formula with supercharged 454s was a $200-$300 per weekend boat. I am guessing that extra third engine increases consumption by more than a third.

Thanks again to everyone for all the opinions.

OSO rocks

You or should I say I don't run as hard with a third engine. The Generator runnin all the time will consume more. If gas will make or break your budget. I would get a crusier.

bford1 03-07-2007 11:24 AM

Gas doesn't make ar break the budget. If I had the Sonic I would trailer it into the gas station and pay $1/gal less that buying it on the water in a cruiser.

The wife would love a cruiser. I am still lobbying for the performance boat with a big cabin. :-)

I know the boat and Bruce Bullock, the broker. It's a great pkg. for the price. However, not meaning this in an ugly way, if you're looking to trailer it to and from the gas station, I would highly consider a different boat. That's A LOT of work --- esp. considering how big this boat is.

The boat runs great, and, for it's age, does need the expected TLC..... which is waaaay worth putting into it, for the price.

There's my .02 cents.

Thanks Joe. I am looking for opinions they are all helpful.

Trailering is a pain. I can go to different lakes or the Gulf if I trailer. Where I live there isn't much of a place to boat. So, my choice is to either trailer in which case the cheaper gas is available. Or, getting a slip and limiting my boating to lake Travis.

I definitely see your point. Trailering my 35 Formula was a pain. Trailering this 45 Sonic would be even more so. But, we could stay on it longer. I'd also have to go buy one of those new F450 Fords or something to trailer the thing. My F250 is ready for a trade in anyways.

Thank you

Actually that is not Offshore Scores boat, but one very similar to it.

45sonic 03-07-2007 07:13 PM

Actually the triple engines are not all that bad on fuel. It just depends on how you run. As far as trailering. We pull with a F350 set up to tow bigger loads but as far as taking it to a gas station it just depends on how far and how the station is set up. Some are a real pain in the @ss to manuever in but other than that it is just a little longer.

What type of cruiser are you looking at? We have one getting ready to go up for sale.

Yes, but it has been painted with different colors and has scoops on the engine hatch also has no arch. Usually keeps it on a lift at Gilligan's

I trailer my 42 Tiger and really havent met with too many issues getting gas at stations, usually people are pretty cool and come up and talk, you get the occaisional idiot that pulls in as your backing up, but they usually get the point when you keep going...most will come over look at the pump and say WOW, it costs that much?

oh and if the one here in MD is an option for you, I highly recommend the efi over the carb one...

hpoffshore 03-08-2007 08:58 AM

A triple engine boat may well consume $100.00/hr, but you have to look @ what you've done withit, and how far you've gone on that same $100.00. A cruiser is truly not much better because of the longer amount of time it takes to arrive at your destination...less fuel burn(maybe) - longer burning time. Also, you're cruising rpm can be as much as 15% less for the same hull speed in a triple package + lower stay-on-plane speeds and less wear & tear on motors and drives. Nothing can change about another filter, spark plugs, oil changes etc.
Engine-room access to do maintanence, in alot of triples, is also very good.

bford1 03-08-2007 04:35 PM

Thanks again for all of the opinions. I'm seriously thinking about buying this big sucker.

If I were to get a cruiser it would probably be a Formula 400SS or 370SS. My dad has a 04 400SS and I think it's great. It just doesn't move. With the 496 HOs it's supposed to do low 50s. But, I can't hardly get the thing over 45. Adding trim actually decreases speed unless you are totally WOT. I love the idea of the Cabin but think I would miss the speed if I went with the cabin cruiser.
