Launch with a crane ?

In general ... at events that have cranes ...how much is the charge ? If you have a steel trailer and dont want to dip it in Salt ...

Audiofn 03-06-2007 02:01 PM

are you talking races or poker runs? For races there is not a charge that I am aware of.

otis311 03-06-2007 02:40 PM

Poker runs are anywheres from $300.00 to $600.00 in and out. They usually charge by the foot

No $hit. I will spend the hour or so rinsing the trailer instead of paying those prices. NYC was $600.00 in and out for my Tiger 2 years ago. Needless to say my trailer got dipped

sakoutis3 03-06-2007 04:06 PM

I like NYC I just go by water.:D

You also forgot to mention that they are open 24/7. Is that the famous Wildwood Truck Wash?

It may only be a 10 minute job, but have checked out the costs of cranes?? and a operator?? And cost of repair if something does break, and possible lost revenue, if unit is down awaiting parts. I would think the organization gets a certain deal for the weekend then charges the participants what they feel that service is worth. Again not sure of all the spec in this situation.

I can say while in a remote area the only crane available to lift a piece of equipment we had broke, and we needed the lift to happen, closest crane capable was 400 miles away, the charge was $13000 for about 2 hrs lifting, and the rest driving back and forth. the orginal quote $18000.

this one didn't go so well......

Still high .

Hanging out at the cranes is almost as fun as hanging out at the ramp. Nothing funnier than to see nice boats w/ the straps on wrong , bow down and the boat not level!

I could understand the price if you called a mobile crane just for you, but it should not cost that much with a permanent crane at a marina.

No matter how many times you use the crane, it still makes you cringe to see your boat swinging in the air!

I rented a 30K capacity crane yesterday. For 6 hours including delivery and 2 operators it was $1000. This wasn't a fly-by-night operation either. They're running 20 crews and fully insured.

bouyhunter 03-08-2007 05:32 PM

I'll probably never own something needing to be "craned" in, But do you need something setup on the boat to crane it? I wouldn't imagine you'd just lift it by the cleats??
Maybe a stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway.

jhiguy377 03-08-2007 08:09 PM

$2.50/ft. @ Anacortes WA

Race boats usually have specialized lifting eyes on the transom and bow or upper deck tied to the stringers and a set of custom straps to lift it straight. Also at many racesites they have a spreader (standard rigging equipment) with 2 large straps to lift boats without lift points-this is a pain in the a$$ on many boats due to steps, trailer design, and weight/balance issues. Some of the race organizations have forced you to have custom straps if you are going to use the crane in order to avoid the strap/spreader gig. Race sites pay for the crane and the crane crew works for t-shirts :D

They are special setups made to lift the boat. There are eyes on the transom and on the top deck that are tied into the stringers to hold the weight of the boat. Here are a few pictures to show you what I am talking about.

This is our old Top Gun. You can see that it does not have the standard rings or eyes on the transom. In place of them it has a different seyup made for lifting. On the bow there are two lifting eyes as well. These eyes are attached to the stringers and a bulkhead inside the boat.

Our Apache uses lifting eyes on the bow that are flush with the deck when not in use. The Gladiator had this same setup on the top deck. The eyes are different than the ones on the Top Gun, but they are attached to the boat's structure the same way. In the picture of the Gladiator top deck, the eyes are next to the Mother's stickers. On the Apache they are in closer to the bow rail. The rear setup on both of these boats is the same as the Top Gun pictured above.
