Gilbert's in Key Largo

Is Gilbert's a good place to eat with a family? We are going to Marathon for vacation the 1st week of April and fly into Ft. Lauderdale and drive the rest of the way. It should be around lunch time when we hit the Key's and I know FPC makes that stop on the poker runs. So I was thinking maybe stop there for lunch and hope to see boats tied up or going by.

This will be my first time to the Keys and looking forward to it. Only plans we have so far is the dolphin adventure in Marathon for our kids age 4 and 6.

Is there anything else we should try and see or do?

Thanks.

Nykamp 03-28-2007 07:48 AM

Yep, it's a great place to get a meal, I was there twice in the last couple weeks. It's the driveway right before the draw bridge going off to your right. Have fun, the Keys are great.

Great place! If you aren't going by boat at least you can feel like you did by sitting along the water and having lunch.
Have a good trip!

Thanks.

sommerfliesby 03-28-2007 09:55 AM

Guess I'll have to stop on my way down April 11!

STUCK 03-28-2007 10:50 AM

Hey dreamer are you there only for the weekend? What's your boat look like and I'll look to see if you are there on Sunday.

Jupiter Sunsation 03-28-2007 11:29 AM

Be on the lookout for big saltwater crocodiles that may pass by Gilberts!

Place is a dump, but cool atmosphere for a lunch stop.

fandango 03-28-2007 11:54 AM

Gilberts is and was one of the best stops while boating in the keys. They (along with many others) are being converted to Condos and such are putting as little money as possible into the existing structures to keep it running until the conversion. Thus if you really look closely it is a dump (but still an icon).

dreamer 03-28-2007 12:06 PM

most of the condo conversions are on hold... the market is in the tank... holiday isle was supposed to be closed last year....

it aint gonna happen for a while... no lenders are gonna touch it... sub prime and a loans are killing it all the flippers are got toasted and so the inventory now is way over the demand

fandango 03-28-2007 12:32 PM

Dreamer, glad to hear that. We were at Gilberts on Christmas and was thinking what a shame that this place will never be the same again.

cfischer 03-28-2007 12:45 PM

Make sure you have one of their Strawberry Daiquiris!! They have the best!!

eric stein 03-28-2007 03:28 PM

used to be really nice but has really been run down due to condo conversion. My recommendation is go a little farther south and about 2 miles down on the East side of the ICW is Sundowners. You can tie up right in front of the restaurant and the food is great. Try the seared tuna ceasar. E.

Or, after you get off the turnpike in Florida City, hang a left on Card Sound road and go to Alabama Jacks...

Once your down in Marathon, try the Cracked Conch Cafe for lunch or dinner.. For breakfast: Stouts...

oldschoolfan 03-28-2007 09:08 PM

I disagree with the cracked conch cafe over rated and over privced my .02 I would go to cabots in marathon great waterfront resturant for dinner mile marker 50 ish. For lunch try the Island Tiki Bar mile marker 60 ish. For breakfast you have to go to The Seven Mile grill right before you hit the 7 mile bridge. Where are you staying there.

We are staying at the Bonefish resort. Anyone know anything about that place? I hope it's nice. My wife and another couple that's going with us came up with this place.

Nykamp 03-29-2007 07:34 AM

Hawks Cay on Duck Key is a great place to stay if you go back down there, and eat at the Wreck just south of there about a mile on the west side of the road.

tizbad4 03-29-2007 07:43 AM

Hawks Cay is great, they also have a dolphin adventure on site. The kids will love it!!!! Have a great trip! (it's hard to have a bad trip down there)

Your actually in Grassy Key MM58 on the Ocean, it will have great views. The kids will like the Turtle hospital MM48.5, Hawks Cay at Duck Key MM61 will have glass botttom boat tours and wave runner rentals. Take everyone to Bahia Honda State park MM39 the other side of the 7 mile bridge, voted one of the best beaches in the US. Sombrero Beach may be more fun for the kids alot of play ground equipment, turn ocean side at Kmart MM50 keep going to the end.

Ted G 03-29-2007 10:52 PM

Gotta stop by Robbies on Islamorada, they will sell you bait fish and they have these huge tarpon that come up to be fed-the kids will love it. The Hungry Tarpon next door makes a really good fried dolphin sandwich :D

STUCK 03-30-2007 06:45 AM

Thanks for the info.

florida gator 03-30-2007 12:00 PM

Agree, Hawks Cay is awesome. And you can go just about anywhere in the keys where fish are being cleaned, grab a carcass and hand feed the tarpon. I just did it @ Hawks Cay while the Capt was cleaning our catch a few weeks ago.

oldschoolfan 04-02-2007 12:16 PM

oldschoolfan 04-02-2007 12:19 PM

I was there a month or so ago. No plans on closing Bruce the former owner sold it about a year and a half ago and Cay Clubs bought it as well as the rest of the town.
