Some plugs do fail when they got hot...like the old coils...my Honda did the same and it was low oil...what happened is as the oil got warm and went through it there wasn't enough on the oil safety switch...a little bit of water from sitting and condensation could be in the tank...check each at a time in that order...then take it apart.Mike

SPARK PLUGS. Mine did exactly the same thing, and tried exactly the same fixes until my mechanic suggested plugs. Perfect now; carry a spare set onboard.

It was cheap, too!

What size generator? If it's a small one and you suspect that it's the carb.... while it's running cover the carb. with your hand, sometimes it sucks all the junk thru the carb and clears it out....

Don't try this if it's a big one though...

If you have to "reset" after it shuts down, it's one of the automatic shutoffs. That could be high temp (is it pumping water?), oil pressure low (check the guage), or overspeed.
If not, it's an air/fuel/spark problem. Check the plugs after it shuts down, that should give you some indication.
BTW, does it restart right away or do you have to let it sit a while?

Use Seafoam in it can buy at napa. as said above small carbs and jets with todays fuels do not get along well. I have been using seafoam in all my small engines and motorcycle for years now and never have had a fuel system problem. I was not a believer until i tried it.

Had some of the same issues with my geny. Two trips to the marina with two different mechanics working on it and $245 later still not fixed. Decided I would try to fix it myself so started reading about different fixes on this forum and other websites. I was sure it was the oil pressure sensor but numerous people recommended changing spark plugs. Figured I would start with the low hanging fruit so I changed the plugs. $9.50 later problem fixed. Who would of thought?
