Kohler gas generator- Help!!-- keeps dying

i have a kohler gas generator that starts and after 3-5 minutes, starts to sputter and pop and eventually dies, then will run for a minute or so then starts hickuping again and quits, changed fuel pump, could it be carbuerator needs adjusting or possibly flooding itself, appreciate any help

Pull carburetor, clean it out thoroughly including removing the jets etc and cleaning the passages.. Todays fuel blow, eat up small carbs very quickly.. Do not store with fuel in carb...

check the oil level.

Does it have a low oil shut off ?

Ditto on the oil pressure shut off switch. Also these are temperamental about choke adjustment, but you did say after 3-5 minutes of running so that might not be it. Sure sounds fuel related if it turns out not to be the switch. Make sure your pump runs even when it starts to spit and sputter. Check the wires feeding the pump with a test light, see if the light goes out when it stalls.

Worst case scenario, I know a very good small engine guy in West County... very reasonable, very knowledgeable. Good luck.

Mine did that on my Searay. Although it was a diesel genset, it turned out to be the secondary fuel filter. Check the filters also.

CHASIN THE DEAL 03-29-2007 06:59 AM

O.K. this is a long shot. Had a generator in a 2000 Excalibur and did all the same things your talking about, dealer worked on it adjusted everything, spent a lot of time and couldnt figure it out. I talked to another dealer ( after about 45 days ) and he said bring it over. He checked it out went in his shop came back out with two new spark plugs and a sheet of paper saying it was a bulletin from Mfg. and they said replace plugs, It ran perfect from then on. Crazy but who knows Good Luck
