A few more questions:
If you have T53's, you can still use #6 drives ?
But what when you use T55's ? What kind of drives? What kind of tranny can handle that ?
I've read about mid-size yachts that use Turbines and Kamewa Waterjet propulsion? How does that work?
Can that work in offshore powerboat applications ?

Peanuts compared to blowing an engine or drive though.
The T-55's require something similar to Arneson or BPM's for drives. Tranny is going to have to be custom built for the application, either by SCS or whoever is building the tranny for The Budweiser team.
The waterjet propulsion thing is great although still needs a gearbox to slow things down at least you don't have to worry about forward neutral and reverse. You also don't get the top speed that you do with a prop in the water. Something about law of deminishing returns when it comes to water throughput vs. impeller size/weight. so not so much on the offshore scene with the water jets.
Although you may want to talk to James Laughlin at Outlaw Eagle in Red Deer Alberta. He is putting together a turbine powered river race boat for the world championships this year and they have some kind of fancy impellor setup that gets them 120mph or so out of a jet drive.

T-53-11 for an engine. Going to give about 850-900hp continuous with max being around 1000hp (The engine is supposedly rated at 1100hp but with the -11 series you are asking for trouble running it that hard... old design with vaporizer tubes instead of atomizing fuel nozzles)
We have had a few requests for quotes using the 1500hp and the splitterbox... just never went anywhere. Pretty spendy for a 24'-30' boat... $45-50K for the engine plus drop boxes, splitterbox, drives.... you really have to want to do it... would be great as a race setup!
Shaft drive is without a doubt going to be more reliable than turning your thrust line a couple of times to get to the prop. You should look at Mike Sages #8 drive. Takes power through like an Arneson, steers like a #6 and trims in true x dimention. www.scsgearbox.com

This is what they do to the # 6 drive.

I was just bustin. My friend just broke a number six gimble. Now he has two of em. if u know anyone looking for one. I think there is a guy selling 2 props shaft on here also.
