Michigan - Lk St Clair Poker Run
Found out today that the MOCA poker run will not take place this year. I know some guys will be happy and others will not. Either way, it would be nice to organize some type of event. Or does anyone know of other Poker Runs in the area besides Smoke On The Water.
I was thinking of $200 - $300 per boat and everyone buys their own lunch and dinner at the last stop (Beach Grill or something along those lines). Instead of having one person organize, we could have a committee responsible for specific tasks. What do the SE Mich guys think???? |
It was soo fun last year and perfect weather. My first poker run! Got some cool pics also.
|
I got about 35 boats together last year mostly from oso and we did a free fun run for anyone that wanted to go, just come along, I brought cards, envelopes, and everyone decided, screw the cards, we met in the lagoon at metro, and all rafted off for an hour or so till everyone showed up, then went out and ran to beach grill, ate drank, ran to muscamoot, rafted, partied for a few hours, then browns, ate and hung out for a while, then left about dusk, made for a good day. If you are looking for a more official type of setting, look into insurance costs, liability, ect. That's why this was informal, word of mouth type run, and all free, we wanted to do a $20 a hand type run, but it never happened, but it was a blast. I've got 6 dacks of cards and 350 envelopes if you pursue it further that I'll give you if you need them. We meet up once and a while, we were just at tin fish on Jan 26th but it's still pretty early to pick dates ect... keep me posted, I got a bunch of friends that all like the informal runs, and I prefer them myself, alot more fun than the moca events, and alot less $$.

I'm with Rob on the more informal runs. At $300 a hand, that's almost $500 for me being a Canadian plus the $500 in fuel for the day, food, drinks, etc. It's well over a 1K for a day. I don't think so, I'll stick to the fun runs! I will help organize any fun run if you are intested. We spoke briefly about it at the Tin Fish and decided we'll pick some dates at the next gathering which will be in March. No date has been picked for that but I think we'll probably head back to the Tin Fish. I think it worked well for everyone.
|
Set it up !!! :D
|
It was pretty cool last year, this year
we have to hit the Sandbar (not literally) though !! |
Boatchic,
Which poker run were you in ? |
MOCA / Metro Beach Poker Run Aug. 11th
|
Ya Chuck, we were supposed to hit the Sandbar remember!
I sat there for an hour waiting with all those hot waitresses, man was I pissed! :D |
There is still the Oshkosh Thunder run, the Chicago Thunder run, and the Sturgeon bay run. Plus we'll have the Lake Michigan fun run.
|
Sounds good to me. Was going to do fun run last year, but wife was with baby and didn't want her bouncing all over the place. And I got way too drunk the night before Tin Fish and felt like sh*t the next day.
Rob, has anyone thought of a longer day trip?? Like Cedar Point, Put-n-Bay, even Cleveland for the night? We could have a joint meeting with the Lake Erie OSO memebers. |
I like both ideas. The fun run would be great for the buddies, and the cruise I might beable to get the wife to go. I couldn't make last years because I was still beached.
|
Hey Folks, the Lake Erie Offshore perf. assoc. poker run is run out of Monroe Aug.3 this year...this has really been an awesome run in the past and gets better every year... for the money you cant beat it,ask anyone who's been. BTW...look for something BIG to take MOCA's place next summer !?!?!?
|
JR - My wife would like the cruise idea very much. Fun run would be for buddies and all of Rob's women friends
LEO...Something Big...hmmmm....Smoke on the Water????? |
There's a bunch of us that always run to Put-in-bay and everywhere else. We hit sandbar sometimes on wed nights, I've never taken my boat to the sandbar though cuz I hate night driving in unframilair waters, but I may just stay on the boat overnight this year. We got a great group of offshore people around here, and let me know what direction you'd like to take this, I'm sure I could help grow this.
I like the runs, but I tend to prefer driving smart and to take it easy, over all. A cruise would appeal to a bigger variety of boats, and keeps the offshore crowd from running hard all day, and still be fun. Something like this could get real big and bring a whole new meaning to these runs, and the family guys can enjoy them with the wife/kids safely, and I'm sure there would still be plenty of action up front, but having the faster boats cruise slower in a bunch, in the back of the crowd, and do the grudge matches past slower boats would open up a whole new set of eye's on the offshore fun world we live in. Rob, sounds like a great topic for March's Tin Fish meeting, which is almost here. No date selected yet?
|
I picked the last date, do you guys want me to pick another one?
|
Hang on with the date, there is crazy days @ boyne in march, and I'm not sure what the date is so if anyone knows post it and lets not make it that weekend, and see if there are bad weekends for some of the others that would like to attend.

Crazy Days (Boyne) March 15 - 17th.
|
What is Crazy Days?
|
I'll help in any way !! :D :D
|
Crazy Days is held at Boyne Mountain (ski resort) each year the Saturday nearest St. Patties day in March. Basically alot of people partying on the mountain and tailgating, a little skiing... etc. One of my annual trips.
|
Is it decent, worth the trip? I haven't been on my board all year and it's pissing me off!
|
Depending on the conditions, it can be decent - Friday is the suggested day to get in some good runs. However, Saturday (from experience) is too crowded to enjoy the hill, one trip up to the fenced beverage area and one run down where i usually show off my "Yard Sale" effect!
|
OK milord, here's the deal, grab your snowboard, put it in your closet, while the closet is open, get a bag, put your liver in the bag, and shut the door leaving the snowboard behind. This is crazy days, I brought my skis about 4 years in a row, but never use them, so I just quit bringing them a few years ago.
|
Hehehe, the "Yard Sale" effect. That's probably why I have never been on ski's! I would do that everytime. The worst you do on a board is lose your hat!
Rob, that doesn't sound bad either! Though you know us Canadians don't like to drink. :D |
I thought of this when I saw the LK ST CLAIR post, Maybe you are or are not Kid Rock fans, I am. But we got a kick out of a line on track 4 called "Cocky" off his new CD "Cocky". It says "I'm Cool Like Fonzy, Rollin' Lake St. Clair in my 40 FT Donzi". I like that. And for the best Poker Run of the year, come to the West Side for Smoke on The Water. That is the run to go on, but gets your wallets out, that probably a 2k-3k weekend. Let me know if anyone has seen Kid Rock down there.
|
I have seen his grilfriend. :D :D :D :D
|
Other than smoke on the water, there's no other poke run on the west side of the state. Count me In :D :D :D If I can help let me know what I can do!! :D :D
|
I saw Kid Rock and Pam anderson at bumpers on the clinton river last spring, sent drinks to them, and didnt bug them, well they watched us party on the deck thru the windows, and an hour later came out and thanked us for the entertainment and got shots for about 12 of us and left, then a few months later I saw them at the peach fest in romeo, and yelled "hey, lets go to bumpers and do shots" , they both busted out", I guess they remembered how retarted we were. never seen em out on the lake. I see Draper and McCarty out in muscamoot a few times a year. Lets get them on a poker run!! I get to take Pamela

Ok, so maybe the first run will be Cedar Point? I'll call tomorrow and find out if reservations could be made for about 20-30 boats (too low/high?). Their marina is very nice and is next to the Millennium Force™. Just checked web site and we can reserve slips of 10 or more for groups.
|
If you guys hit C.P. let me know I'm in slip 823. I would also make my move soon the guest docks get busy. I would think Kelly's would make for a better spot on a fun run better atmospere than C.P. and a bit different than PIB. You can also catch the Rocket to shuttle you around the area.
If you need my help with contacts at any of these locations let me know. I have names phone numbers and some influence. (remember I said some) :D |
Scott good idea about Kelleys. I don't think sun, beer and the Millenium Force go to well together! :(
|
I was thinking that if you had a lot of people together CP might be a crowd breaker kinda tough staying in a group and dealing with the long lines. I would have to say if you have never tried it by boat it's a must for small groups or familys.
They do have a shuttle that takes you to different spots around the park. A lot of the time we don't get there till late Friday night and take advantage of short lines and Friday's restaurant in Hotel Breakers. They (the bar tenders) know us all too well at Bay Harbor (the marina restaurant). ;) Like I said anyone needs info or suggestions on staying there feel free to contact me. Scott |
Keep me in the loop too. Scott, you still have those cup holders? It may be the only part of the boat that works at this point. Ever split a hull and deck apart? Boy is that fun, at least it will be right when I get done with it. Only gonna get one engine done this winter, Oh well.
|
Scott, Kellys Island sounds fun also. I'm open to anything. Just want things planned in advance so we can schedule the dates this summer.
Scott, you can arrange Kellys...then drive up to Detroit then back down with the group :) |
Cedar Point has lots of openings right now. If we did as group, we would have to book for two nights. Otherwise, each boat could make their own reservations. If that's a trip everyone wants to do, then we just need to pick dates. Thursdays are good days.
What about one day at CP, then to the Flats in Cleveland and back to Put-n-Bay. |
96Vyper, friends of mine made the trip to Cleveland last year and weren't impressed with how boater friendly it was. They said they wouldn't go back. I have never been so it's only hersay at this point.
Oh, I'm also afraid of roller coasters! :D |
I've heard the same thing about Cleveland--not boater friendly---gas,docks,etc, especially for a large group. Don't forget if you guy's are coming from jefferson beach that's a long haul for a large group! Let me Know about Kelley's etc. I'll be in, probably have 4/5 more following. Cedar Point is on my list for early spring, I hate those 2-3 hour lines.
