new 44 Liquid Technologies

I had the opportunity yesterday to be with the group while they were testing the 44 all aluminum stepped v-hull. The finish on the boat is amazing in its perfection; my very picky brother was there and he gave the hull finish and execution a 10. The rigging is also top notch; I spent a fair while eyeballing the engine room and systems while getting specifics from the engine builder. They are still working on resetting the x dimension as the drives are still a bit low even with the spacer blocks off of the Teague lowers. They will also change props and gear ratios to get more bow lift. The boat ran 96-97 mph and in my opinion has an awful lot more speed left in it judging by the ride attitude, wetted surface and fairly low rpms. It was a pleasure talking to the owner, the boat builder and their whole team. I enjoyed meeting Tres Martin as well, very knowledgeable and has a few stories from the "good old days". Tim at Oregon Custom Marine is also a wealth of knowledge especially for a "young fella". -Jeff

850 HP and it ran 97??????????? Am I reading this wrong?

With 1700 HP I can get my Hummer to 97 on water.

jhiguy377 04-05-2007 06:06 PM

I'm not the authority, just an observer but the destroked 572's(565 cid) are making closer to 700 hp and the boat is not close to dialed in yet. Different props, gear ratio, x-dimension, c/g rearward adjustment, etc and I'm thinking 115+ mph.- Jeff

Looks great guys. Keep up the good work and keep us posted. Sharp looking ride.

A Hummer still wont go 97! :drink:

I'm not the authority either but have followed both builds on two diffent boating sites. They are still working everything out from what I've heard. This is a completely new boat from the other and they are still faaaaar from dialing it in.

I do believe the old hull went between the 100 and 105 mark with less power and they moved things around on this hull to get it to run more effecient/effectively at higher speeds. I'm guessing 115+ is what they are looking for...and what they'll see when they're done.

The first boat ran well over 115.

This boat will go after they get some different propellers and adjustments.

OK lets wait. There are some needed changes. The boat has lots of potential. Rome was not built in a day.

jhiguy377 04-06-2007 04:53 PM

I agree with thisistank and rik that there is much more potential in this boat. I also really want to give the builder the benefit of the doubt as they are first class and employed the advice of Tres Martin.
My observation - and I'm no naval architect - is that the boat was running very wet with approx. 38-40' in the water and water breaking just behind the stem and above the forward strake; this with tabs up and drives trimmed correctly (a fair rooster tale). The boat did not seem at all loose/free although Tres and Tim said it felt free in the cockpit. -Jeff

It looks like you slipped a post in front of me Tres, I wholeheartedly agree with you; you seem to have the appropriate professional demeanor and knowledge. Congratulations on a great boat. -Jeff

Just curious if anyone knows why you would go with Cam driven alternators? I would think that would put more stress on the cam and gears? Just currious.

Man I love the looks of this boat!!!! Reminds me a lot of the Phantoms.

I am not real technical with rigging but looking at the picture the drives seem really low. The boat looks awesome and is something that is definitly different. I hope to see some really good numbers once it gets dialed in. Good job liquid!

I wondered the same thing........When i was putting a gear drive on my 540 everybody pounded me for the harmonics issue...................That is one bad piece

jhiguy377 04-07-2007 12:23 PM

1.) The alternator sure looked tight and clean, and I guess that the harmonics do play into torsional cam loading/unloading; maybe its less pronounced at the relatively low rpms run by this boat. 2.)Yes the drives are likely still a bit low - one of the reasons there is so much potential left. I look forward to seeing this boat up in Portland again. -Jeff
