Trs?

ok so I know it's an older drive. Have heard people say they arn't so good, heard others say they are fine.

Looking at a boat that has 502's with a slight build to look like 500hp's. Has the TRS drives on it. What are your thoughts on this?

It's an 88 boat so it has to be near the end of when they used the TRS.

Plenty strong for 500Hp to 650Hp. Maintenence is key as with all drives.

they always worked for me; currently running 509's w/about 500 hp. I'd probably stop the reliabiltiy curve at about 550-600 hp. as usual almost everything depends on how you use it. -jeff

Are parts real hard to get for them? Is there a way to upgrade to a newer drive setup? I like this boat but the TRS drive makes me skittish.

The weak link can be the transmission in front of them. If it's the Borg Warner verision you should be OK, but if it's the Merc trans, watch out, that's too much hp for them.

TRS internal parts are not too hard to come by.

Konrad makes a direct replacement for the TRS. Excellent package.

I had a TRS on my '86 250 Force, and I loved it.
Smooth shifting, easy around the docks.
There has been a scare for at least ten years that parts are getting hard to find, but I've yet to hear of ANYONE HAVING to change to a different drive because of parts.
Not sure where Decatur is, but there used to be a boat salvage place in LaSalle MI called Checker Marine, and I bought stuff from him for mine - wasn't a big deal. Don't know if he's still out there, but I happen to have an advertisement pen sitting on my desk right now that has all his contact info if it'll help at all.

If you blow it up, Konrad sounds like a good reliable way to go without having to fill and re-cut the transom.

They made the TRS until 1993.

MILD THUNDER 04-12-2007 07:21 PM

I would take the trs over bravos. I like the smooth shifts, and mine have 600 hours on them behind a 40ft Excalibur and nothing done to them except maintenance. As long as you have the borg warners, especially the 72C green tag trannies, you'll be fine.

We agree with Mild Thunder.

Yep, the Borg Warner was great.
