$6K 496 HO build up

I want to set a $6000 limit this summer on an engine build up. 01' 496mag HO, stock everything. Price has to include a new prop, and parts only. Where would you HO guys start? Headers, and cam? Raylar?

thx

Young Performance 04-15-2007 01:32 PM

I'm not sure of the exact price of the CMI's for the 496, but I think they are between 4000 and 4500. Those and a prop are most of your budget and you probably won't see much improvement for it.
Hardin is making a set of headers for the 496 that are much cheaper than the CMI's, but I don't know the exact price.

Buddy OO 04-15-2007 02:18 PM

best bet is to call Ray, he has his 103 kit which makes 525hp with stock headers, think the price is between 5-6k.

tblrklakemo 04-15-2007 02:20 PM

Headers arent a must....if there is more bang for your buck with internals than I will go there. But, CMI's and a prop should leave me another grand-ish...i would think.

Raylar 04-15-2007 07:57 PM

More Zap for a 496HO Merc.

Our BCK103 kit will get you our new aluminum heads, stainless roller rockers, new intake manifold, new billet camshaft, new ARP special head bolts and new Cometic MLS head gaskets. Everything you need except a tube of gray sealant. This kit will cost you $6360.00 plus UPS and will give you a real +100HP on your stock 496 block and ECM. It will probably require a prop change. I have seen a lot of nice low hour Bravo 4 blades for about $300-400. On a 27 fountain this real 100 hp increase properly set up should give you about 8-10 mph increase. this is a little over your budget but not by much. I am thinking a set of CMI's will set you back about $5k unless you have silent choice-captains call in which case it will set you back about $6K. the Dana Exhaust is about $2500 and I would think the 40HP or so gain of the headers/header manifolds will give you about 3-4 mph with or without a prop change, depending on your current max rpms and prop type. Put the CMI's or Dana exhausts on top of our kit and you would be at about 560 to 570HP and a subsequent addtional cost and speed increase. Sounds like you got some deciding to do. If we can help, let us know.

Regards,
Ray @ Raylar

FYI: I re-powered the boat this winter and was able to make an even swap with my props (IE: sell used one for $400, buy used one at proper pitch for $400)

Nobody in particular, list and shop here on the OSO classifieds. Just pointing out that the prop expense can be offset by selling your old one if the pitch needs to be changed.

jonyb 04-15-2007 10:42 PM

$6K would buy you a pro-charger.

Now that's funny right there!!!!!

I think the Raylar kit is the best bet, if you want to keep the 496. My point was that if you buy CMI headers and a prop, you blow almost all of your budget and don't get much mph in return.
The other option is to sell the 496, add the $6300 you would spend on the Raylar kit (plus the CMI's) and start from scratch. I, and others builders on here, could get you 600+ hp for about the same money. Let me know if I can help. Eddie

Dana Marine Exhaust, & add a Raylar kit.. ;) Jamie / Lakeside

Are you like me and disgusted that the prices of these exhaust have gone up considerably due to demand (aluminum and steel have not increased that much since these options became available)? If I remember right, the CMI stuff was a lot cheaper when it first cam out.

I actually pulled the trigger on 2 sets of Dana manifolds until I got a call back from the guys I had doing my bottom work (a Dana distributor) telling me that the price they quoted me was no good because their cost has increased 50% since the first of the year. Demand drives price. I just have a hard time driving the price by joining in. May just have to go slower this year.

I would also like to find another option too, but even with Raylar's kit, wouldn't it be benificial to have some sort of exhaust to go with it?

Canada Jeff 04-16-2007 01:55 PM

Don't forget he has to install the raylar kit, or pay someone to install it. $$$

Headers and prop this year, Raylar next year :-)

I think the original question was for parts only.. ;)

I know.. Nothing is checp anymore.. Ya gotta pay to play.. :)

I am installing the Dana exhaust on my own boat this year along with a few other small items. The bigger engine stuff is going to be for next winter.. And that is looking to be the Raylar pack.. ;)

I think it's ridiculous that you can either get a Raylar kit, or a Pro-charger for $1000 more than a set of headers.

Undertaker 04-16-2007 04:14 PM

Dana Exhaust & Prop and ya might want to consider full hydraulic steering if your boat is not already equipped. Raylar next year. That is the route I think I am going on my ride, already bought the Dana Exhaust:D:D:D

That is one reason I bought a fountain.....come std with full hydro steering and K-planes. As with any boat, I want more power and speed.

I'm thinking the same thing. Have you heard anything on the backorder status from Dana?

LAKESIDE RESTORATIONS 04-16-2007 11:19 PM

Last my rep there told me it was about a 40-60 day wait from when ordered now.. They also should be filling more of the current backorders in the mean time over the next few weeks.. That was as of last week, however I dont know if anything has changed since that discussion.. :)

Btw: They do seem to be put together nicely. I am installing some currently including another set for my own boat.. I will post some pics as here & there when I get some time.. ;) Jamie / Lakeside

I guess prochargers are just plain ol evil,:evilb: ,Smitty

Canada Jeff 04-17-2007 06:17 AM

I don't believe Procharger has as good a kit as Whipple. The computer maping is the week part of Procharger.

Only from what I have read and resurched.

Jim Diesel 04-17-2007 06:36 AM

I dont think you have to map anything on the 3.5 or 5 psi kit from Procahrger. Only bad thing about putting a kit on a 04-07 496 is that there not procharger friendly, something about them changing piston design and clean air programming.

dana marine products 04-17-2007 10:00 AM

An updated status for 496 exhaust kits, we have a batch that will be shipping within 2 weeks. The batch is very sizable, but they are all spoken for. We have a 2nd batch to be delivered roughly 2-3 weeks behind that. There will be remaining inventory out of the 2nd batch. (as of right now).

Anyone who is on the fence about making a DMP exhaust purchase my advice would be to get your name on our list. There's no financial obligation. But it will secure a place in line. We would simply call you when your system is ready, if you want to continue the transaction, we would then collect a form of payment. If you change your mind and do not want to make the purchase, it's no problem.

tblrklakemo 04-17-2007 10:10 AM

DMP,Is there a way I can get my PCM mount modified without any down time. Do you guys have any laying around that you could ship with some manifolds and I will exchange you mine when I get it?

I believe the 496 HO in 2001 still had forged internals so Whipple it.

Hardin is making a set of headers for the 496 that are much cheaper than the CMI's, but I don't know the exact price.

The Hardin headers are $4200.00 a set and they don't include relocation brackets for the ECU and oil filter from what I can tell.

The hardin headers (made by lightning If I remember correctly) are almost the same as the CMI..
