Are Headers worth the money?

I was recently on CP Performance's website I was looking into buying Headers. My jaw dropped when I saw the price. Does anybody know what kind of gains you will get from this mod, or if anyone else has them cheaper? I am looking around $6200 for both motors, at CP's price. I am wondering if anyone has installed these, and if so are the gains worth the money?

Headers alone are pretty expensive for a small gain of maybe a few MPH. The big gains come from numerous mods to you power train system like head upgrades, cam, fuel system, etc. If you want more info, post your current engine spec's and someone can likely give you more specifics on the performance impact of headers only you current combination.

As stated above, Headers alone aren't "worth" the money.....but if you have other mods to stock power being installed or planned, Headers are a necessary step in achieving additional HP.

I plan to install small super chargers, aluminum heads and possibly camshafts. My engines are 350 Mags.

Yes headers will help but, they are a maintance item needed to be checked for water leakage, rust......etc. Expect to replace every few years on the most part.

Stormrider 04-16-2007 08:22 AM

MM, you have no choice w/ those motors...
tom, check stainless marine gen2 manifolds.
call and ask for brownie... tell him what you're looking to do and he'll let you know if they are enough...
i'm pretty sure they are, and you'd be done for under 4000 w/ 5yr warranty. Not as pretty as headers though.

el indio 04-16-2007 08:50 AM

over 511" i believe you need em.......rob will we see you in strong island?..........m.m......

Stormrider 04-16-2007 09:48 AM

hells yea... but you better make arrangements w/ tommy now.
btw, will big cubes you can go to SM gen III.

Tommy showed me dyno tests that show Stainless Marine Gen III made more power and torque on my supercharged 581motors than Stelling headers!!!!

gen 111 stainless marine no question...............they will make make more power on a dyno and last a hell of a lot longer than tubular headers

pullmytrigger 04-16-2007 08:22 PM

I have Revolution Marine manifolds on my smallies and am real happy with them .......2gs will get it done for both motors fully polished and take 200 lbs off the back of your boat

tomlesli 04-16-2007 10:14 PM

That sounds like what I need...Do you have any pics on hand, that you could post?

theres a loaded question!.......I will say a Fountain is almost impossible to beat in performance vs price and they dont make Scarabs anymore.....
I will also say that a twin 29 Scarab is my nemisis at the lake.......I finally saw one out one time although we were both badly loaded down with people and gear.....like 5 and 6 people each!.......he steadily inched away.......talked to him later he had the 300hp FI motors and I have the 270hp carb motors with a zillion hrs....its all good
noticably picked up some low end with the Rev exhaust and about another 500rpm on top,(the Scarab race was pre Rev ) Im real happy with them, Id buy them again in a heartbeat.
where are you guys from?

tomlesli 04-17-2007 09:16 PM

We are from Utah! Thanks for your insight on the Fountain. My wife is happy....Maybe I should save my money for a Fountain instead of putting it towards an exhaust system.

pullmytrigger 04-17-2007 11:10 PM

Theres nothing wrong with a 29 Scarab at all......but then again you gotta keep the wife happy!:drink:

A very decent priced header for a standard Bravo configuration is the Unitop Header by CMI. This true header is an Elbow Top Header with a welded tail piece and they perform and look like an Elbow Top header.

We just sold a set the other day and it was the first time I personally had seen them. They are much closer in price to a manifold that other headers in the CMI line.

So if you have a standard Bravo configuration, consider the Unitop Header. Great looks, performance and price for a true header!

No doubt! They would be my next choice of exhaust system!

They hold up to the constant heat cycles and vibration much better than headers IMHO....
